While the Mace Windu fought with the dark lord of the Sith, and got zapped by lighting before plunging out of a building, it never completed his death. Jedi survived much worse than that, and although injured by a light saber, did not get skewered by one. So there is a chance in my opinion, that Mace survived the Clone War, and hid during order 66.

if that happened it would be possible he could still be alive in the force awakens timeline, perhaps after the fall of the empire he could have become the supreme leader of an orgonisation replacing it.

Far more likely he would have ended up offering his services to Luke Skywalker after finding out that the Jedi had resurfaced, a highly experianced Old Republic Jedi Master, not far off Yoda's skill level, would have been of great assistance to Luke in rebuilding the Jedi.

or the silly option, Dath Jarjar could have found Windu and nursed him back to health then taken him on as his apprentice, after all Windu was strong in both the dark side and the light, as hinted at by his Lightsaber colour (red+blue=purple) he just controled his dark side
