So... This is just something I've been wondering for a bit. Why is it that both the Nightstar and Annihilator have quad torso-mounted missile HPs? Hell, the two variants nearly do the same thing with the exception of arm hardpoints.
Either this isn't coincidental (I mean, I *guess* there's no missile-boating 95-tonner for the IS), or... Someone's losing creativity somewhere.

You can have only so many variants before they start to overlap each other. Just nature of things. If PGI had bothered to implement sized hardpoints then variants could have retained uniqueness longer. But they didn't.

I like it. You don't want to encroach on the Banshee's turf so a missile boat makes sense.

Technically they could size the harpoints to different tube numbers. However that wouldn't really matter for SRM splat. Although, it may for the MRMs.

The reason is because some people will just naturally like one mech over another even if they have the exact same hardpoints.
Aesthetics for example are just about as important to some people as the quality of the build is too others. For example, there are several mechs in this game I have no interest in piloting for no other reason than they look goofy to me. At the same time, I have a few mech I play just because I think they look great, despite the fact I have other mechs that perform better.
So there really isn't an issue with two mechs having nearly the same or even the same loadout because someone, somewhere, will pilot the mech just because they happen to like the way it looks. Also geometry will play a large part in things as well. Just because two mechs have the same hardpoints, doesn't always mean they can both utilize those hardpoints just as effectively.
