If you look at any mechs art on sarna.net, you can generally gauge which weapons are what.
In every piece of art, lasers have barrels. Generally, the art has them extremely exaggerated mind you, but still.

A tag lasers, should have no size comparison to a large laser.
Medium and small lasers are generally very similar in size, so they aren't much of an issue.
Albeit medium lasers are SLIGHTLY bigger. Small lasers and tag lasers could very well share a weapon barrel.
However! Large lasers, in all art, are roughly a similar size to a PPC.

Why is this issue brought up? the release of heavy lasers.
Heavy lasers, are MASSIVE weapons. Heavy large lasers being bigger than an AC-20.
http://www.sarna.net...e:Solitaire.jpg take a look at this mech for an example.
or this one http://www.sarna.net...le:Hellfire.jpg
The large shoulder weapons on both mechs are heavy large lasers.

And dont tell me it doesn't frustrate you when you slap a small or large laser on your k-2's shoulders and it looks NO different.

Barrels for energie weapons would be nice but they should stay shorter compared to AC, Gauss and the like.

Medium and small lasers are actually relatively small, however, large lasers and up do actually hit a size close toooo an ac-5-ac10 well say (if your going by art for nearly any battlemech). Heavy large lasers (coming in 3060) binary and bombast lasers (not yet in game) are massive, being comparable to or even rivaling gauss rifles and ac-20's

Have to say NO - although I really would like to have it.

While I would like to have a "real large laser for my TDR"
It would increase the "bulk" of the game a lot.

Currently - you have a single representation for every weapon and weapon combination that is possible for a mech
(so 2 MachineGuns, 2 AC2s, 2UAC5s 2 AC5s, 2LB10X, 1AC10, 1Gauss, 1AC20 just for the RT of the Atlas.
and when they really want to put weapon visuals for "all" 3060 tech - you can add: HGR; 2 lGR, 2 RAC10s; 2RAC2s; all the LBX and UACs and Machine Gun variants

This alone would ~ double the size of MWOs Harddisk and Patchsize

With different representations for different lasers - you'll get an even worse issue.

They need a complete different system, the price are hardpoint sizes:
this would allow to have surplus weapon models that fit on every mech, AND you only need 1 Model for all the wepaons that you can mount.

O.O i just read your post, and i completely 100% agree with you.
Your proposed changes would solve allot of visual problems i personally have with the game.

For anyone reading this, take a look at Karl Streigers proposed new system for weapon socket placement, its great work.

I agree, It'd be nice aesthetically to see the difference and gives you more tactical value before you gather target info. With the upcoming civil war tech and energy rebalance, PGI should have enough instances at which they can improve it.

I'd also like Machine Guns (for example on the UM-R60) to receive an overhaul, with light and heavy variants coming up. Try putting 4 MGs on the urbie, it looks terrible and the MGs are unnecessarily spaced into 4 huge boxes for tiny barrels. The barrels should be put closer together.
