I have questions because I feel like things changed and I didnt notice them and now I no longer understand.
It used to be(to my understanding) that in order to kill a mech, you had to strip the armor THEN murder the structure however what I have seen recently its possible to do damage to both at the same time.
Is it that the armor absorbs most of the damage and then your structure takes some like some what realism?
Do certain weapons have an armor piercing sort of property? if this is the case why is it that there is nothing in the firepower tree to buff this as that seems like it would be a decent meta to work around for heavy/assault killing.

As an example, I've been in several matches with my little raven 4x carrying 2 MLAS and 2 machine guns w/ an AMS. I go to poke a pristine mech on the other side and both the CT armor and structure turn yellow.

Maybe I didnt notice it getting pounded at the same time i shot?

Any one have an idea as to whats up or do i just not understand whats going on?

he may have taken heat damage by himself from overheating
or he may have been shot at from behind/you may have grazed the section that is his back without him having back armour.

if you were firing 2+ ppc's then one might have gone through and hit the back.

Structure can only be damaged if the armor protecting it is gone. Unless the mech is overheating, and/or is suffering from ammo/weapon explosion.

Damage that is enough to remove the armor, does pass on to structure, so it is possible considering the massive Alpha damage some mechs are capable of, to strip armor and structure in 1 hit on quite a few mechs, mostly heavies and lesser weight classes though.

And it if scores a crit, could also be dealing extra damage.

Best explanation I've got is heat damage or someone shooting the target from the rear. 'Cause you're not supposed to ever damage structure without the armor being gone.

MASC too, been seeing a lot of jokers intentionally MASCing themselves to death recently.

Someone may of used a C.G.A. cannon on the mech you saw, that is designed to destroy mechs from inside out.
