Installed the game via Steam. Been playing just fine for a few weeks. Steam created a shortcut on my desktop that I use to launch the game. I don't use Steam to launch it. Just double-click the shortcut and off I go.
The path that the shortcut tries to execute is:
"C:\Steam\steamapps\common\MechWarrior Online\Bin64\MWOClient.exe"

Came home and tried to use that same shortcut and it won't let me get past the login screen. Says there's an update, I need to shutdown and update. Fine. I start the update. For some reason though, Steam now jumps in and says I need to update 16.1GB worth of files!!!!

I downloaded the standalone files, but the instructions on how to manually update don't match up with with the launcher is showing. I have the files, I just need to know how to update them. Thanks in advance.

yeah, the situation your describing is why I eventually moved away from the steam version .... it wanted to re-download ridiculous amounts of data, every patch .... the overlay was occasionally annoying with key binds that I'm not using anymore .... I swapped to the steam version because I hated with a passion the old torrent download stuff, it just didn't work well near my endpoint of the internet, whereas steam had localised servers that ran faster ... long story short I ended up with fibre internet and stopped caring how much was downloaded ...

anyway I digress, the standalone patch files, 'plug in' to the standalone patcher .... at no point will the steam version 'execute' them .... and only the launcher, now called 'portal', will be able to process them .... don't take that as word of gospel, because I haven't really looked at it, but generally, a bit of the 'patch' goes here, some goes there, and its not quite as simple as unzipping the file ...

and heres where it goes bad, the old launcher, we used to be able to set the game directory, it was (at least at some points ) possible to hybridize the game from steam to non steam .... but at the moment, I don't think its as easy ...

theres an option, in the repair tool, that says 'Try to fetch files from other MWO installs on this computer' .... maybe, if you downloaded the portal, click that box, it might find the steam version ? I really don't know what that option will do ....

if your on windows 10, and 'fully' up to date, you could try hybridising the two directories with symlinks, or hardlinks, where the two separate directories point to one place ... could turn into an adventure that might last longer than redownloading the whole thing ...

short of that, you'll probably have to decide to have steam do this to you, over and over, or swap back to the portal .... you could complain to technical support, but they wont have a code fix in any hurry to help you ...
