The only reason i've played mwo so long was because i ran with a casual cw unit for two years and it was a blast. Now I mainly solo drop because of time constraints.

Why would you do that in a mech game?
Because apparently mechs are still a niche, but who doesn't like tanks.
Wanna buy a tankpak?
I would.

Don't tanks have more of a support role? Gameplay-wise and lore-wise, don't tanks suck in comparation with mechs?

They've got the fans that come along with the IP, but that's the ceiling with what they've got and its a shame. "Mech combat" is not "niche;" it's a legitimate genre. There are lots of people out there who would love to play a good game based in that genre. The IP, with its extensive canon and game-ready fan-base should only sweeten the pot.
But cryengine is getting moldy. Beyond this, I think the reality is that PGI isn't capable of turning MW into the AAA experience it could be. PGI has already admitted they don't completely understand their own source code, due to programmer turnover (Ask about variable ammo on LB/10X.). Remember how long it took for them to update the UI? To get the weak-tea CW up and running? As someone else mentioned, there are simply better put-together online games out there for potential players to choose from.
Unfortunately, I don't think Unreal is the silver bullet upgrade many hope for, and --even with more advertising-- I don't think any significant amount of new players they draw in will want to stay and spend money. I think PGI is out of their league, and while there may be some small improvements, this is about as good as it gets.

And even if they had money, the solution isn't that simple where more promotions = more players. Many end up being overhyped with subpar gameplay, and within a month of release the player count crashes (eg. Evolve, For Honor, Star Wars Battlefront). Its even harder to promote a game like MWO thats been around for years in its ****** state.

Unless they start porting it over to consoles expect population to slowly decline even more over time. It's inevitable when your plan doesn't care about player retention.

Like me, Im a diehard fan of MW since I was young, and have been playing MWO since the beta, oh the old times :')
A LOT of memories, the old Forest Colony was my most favourite one, I remember hiding in the waterfall near the spawn and shutting down and just waiting for the enemy to pass me by.

Anyone familiar with the Battletech IP has pretty much experienced this game and made their assessment.
Anyone NOT familiar with this game, is in all likelyhood, going to be aware of this game through youtube letsplayers.
Retention is the problem, and it's the result of a mismatch between the whole of this game and the expectations of today's gamers.

That's true but people play what they want despite the inferiority of a mech.
PGI should at least take a look at it.

That's not the same. If tanks are ment to attract new players - this intention is doomed if new players are welcomed by a stomping.

Guys if PGI just spent $1500 every 2 months on a badass 3/4 min youtube video like the one MRBC did quality wise, but showing off all the upcoming features and mechs it would give the bloggasphere / gamer magazine sites SOMETHING to post. Even if its just a small two sentence news item and the yt video, if its cool people will check it out.
Thats all it takes.

I can't really see anyone spending a lot of money on these type of things other than BT fans.
I myself bought 6 mechpacks less the New Nightstar.
Collector Uzil, annihilator, then standard, MKII, Osiris, Arctic Wolf and Nova Cat. Thats $200 something bucks on nonsense.
Grinding Cbills in my alternate account is murder, if I didn't have cash to blow I'd already have quit this game out of boredom from the grind or frustration(if you picked a mech to buy with cbills just to find out its garbage).
I think they need to add a little more depth to the game to attain a far larger audience. Other than that I think this is a niche game....Not sure anyone born after 1984-1987ish would have been old enough to know what this Mechwarrior is unless exposed to it from, what are now, parents. That generation...well we're all in our 30s now and Mechwarrior and BT have been unseen for, what 10+ years other than MWO?
EDIT: Holy moly MW4: Vengeance came out in Y2K...17 years ago...dear lord I'm getting old.

- Academy needs to be more visibile (and allow you to take your current mech).
- Testing grounds needs a dropdown box for gamemode (so you can try stuff out without 23 other people running around).
When you jump into QP and get a team that just hides and dies, that doesn't make for exciting gameplay.
Matchmaking in QP queue is really, really horrible at times and high tiers going seal clubbing with alt accounts (making people overall more cautious) and tier spread being way too huge (tier 5s should not have to face tier 2s) do not help.

PGI has yet to do any actual or real mainstream advertising, aside from the 2009 trailer that was for a completely different game called the mechwarrior reboot.
Youtube trailers are not enough.
You MUST do ACTUAL marketing and paid advertising to actually gain mainstream recognition.
