As the title says, Phenom II X4s are becoming hard to find. Can't get anything higher than a 965 now. That's extremely alarming to me, because Phenom II X4s have been the most cost-efficient CPUs for years and they are still pretty much all that's needed to play games these days, even at high settings. As far as being relevant to MWO, this game will use CryEngine 3... CryEngine 3 is designed to run on quad-core systems so I heavily doubt you'll need more than a PII X4 970 to run the game reliably at high settings (speaking from experience, wink wink).
This is jarring to me cause I have a friend who is going to be buying a new PC this year, and he wants me to build it. I know you all are probably opening up many tabs and recommending to me a full build right now, but I had it covered up until I found out that... y'can't get a PII X4 970 on Newegg anymore. I understand that Intel processors are all-around better now, but we can't afford an i5 and i3s don't have enough cores. And on top of that, FX-series processors are absolute ****...
Or are they? That's my question, really. What kind of clock speeds are we going to need out of a FX to have it at least compete with a Phenom II?

An AMD FX processor is 5-10% slower clock for clock than a Phenom II, assume 10%, so you are looking at, to be safe, 300mhz higher clockspeeds.

OP - There is only a 100 MHz difference between the 970 and 965. You won't even notice the speed difference.
So though you are "alarmed" I think in this case it's False.
$109 with free shipping.

I bought the 980 (3.7Ghz) and its still running very well. I was lucky that i got it a little before the FX series came out. I too have noticed that trying to get anything above a 965 is pretty hard now.

Here in Portugal, the X4 965BE is still easy enough to find as well as some of the X6s.
The one that is getting very hard to find is the X4 960T (a pity since it was an awesome unlock to hexa at 100€) .

I got a Ph.II 1090T Black Edition for €80 (second hand).
Possibly the ultimate upgrade for my old Asus AM2+ M3a78 board.
Guess I'm lucky for once (but still P-E-N-D-I-N-G!!!)

The 8350 will be released soon and that should be running at 4 Ghz with a 4.2 turbo mode and should be a great performer. If you can wait till October you will love the new Vishera cored 8350, I'll be upgrading 2 8150 rigs to the new CPU. It would mean a new motherboard for you but I think you will need to upgrade soon anyway.
The 8150 I currently use along with a 6990 video card is a great gaming rig.

Yeah, AMD stopped production because they knew they couldn't sell Bulldozer otherwise. *snerk*
Fortunately, BD is still an okay CPU. I mean, there's worse out there.
I dislike the power consumption though.
