Rank from these categories from most important to least important:

a) Appearance
B) nostalgia factor
c) meta-capability*
d) weapon mounts*
e) peer pressure (cause your unit said so)
f) troll factor
g) variety
h) clueless (don't know any better)

*I dissociate c and d because a mech can potentially have great mounts but not good in competitive circle, and vice versa
----------------------------------

And again, this is for REAL MONEY purchase, I will accept MC as you need more or less real life monetary transaction first. BUT NOT WHY YOU WOULD PURCHASE WITH CBILLS

For me...
1: appearance
2: weapon mounts
3: nostalgia factor
4: meta capable
5: variety
6: troll
7: clueless
8: peer pressure

1: a)
2: d) - as long as "I can fit this build I dreamed up on it" falls under d).
3: B)
4: g)

That's it, I think.

In order:

A. Appearance - I only play pretty 'Mechs.

D. Weapon Mounts - depends on how massive the 'Mech is, too, but even a couple well-placed and well-appointed hard-points piques my interest. Does not have to be high-mounted, mind you, just spread around in a useful manner and be of the right type.

C. Meta Capability - if it can't mount some spin on one of the meta archetypes, I probably won't buy it.

G. Variety - I never bought into Resistance packages because of all the bland energy boating.

The rest are irrelevant to me. I have no nostalgia, I don't play actual troll builds, I can't be pressured since I play solo these days, and I know what I'm doing.

e: peer pressure (cause your unit said so)
h: clueless (don't know any better)

Its medium.
Its an Inner Sphere mech.
The number of different builds on the same mech. Build diversity!
Lore.
The amount of CB i can make with the Mech.
So I really want that crab. Maybe the Wolf Hound because its Kells Hound material.

Founder purchase. Reason: Great Value, Iconic Mechs, Beta Access. Result: Very happy with this purchase.

Phoenix purchase. Reason: Wanted to "support; the devs (foolish me) and liked the mechs. Result: Unhappy. Unique geometry that makes them harder to see out of (LCT) and easier to hit (the other 3)

Bushwacker basic package + Hero. Reason: Wanted hero and Loyalty mech. Result: Overall happy. Not a fan of the basic bushwackers but I love the hero.

I had at one time purchased the Marauder and WarHammer but had those both refunded during "lasers do less damage when not target locked" idiocy of Paul... I like to think that refund contributed in a small way to the reversal of that horrid trajectory.

In the future the main thing that will drive an actual federal reserve currency purchase would be if I see myself enjoying piloting a hero more so than the other variants.

1. Someone gifted me a basic pack, and I must have the Hero variant. Like when I bought the Jade Kite. Since I was gifted the MCII pack recently, I might get the Deathstrike.

In no particular order (they are all a factor and I honestly can't say what is more important than the other but they all need to be present for a real $ purchase).

Nostalgia.
Appearance.
Weapons mounts.

Though to spend real $ I can't get t the above until I get past:

My love of the game/community momentarily overwhelming my regular contempt and irritation for PGI's provocative ignorance of their own product and its potential customers.

(A)Appearance and (D)Weapon mounts are tie for first. (G)Variety is a distant third.

Really only applies to hero mechs, though. I won't do preorders because the in-game model is often too different from the art. I remember being very tempted by the Zeus and the Enforcer but they both ended up looking goofy. That was also about the time they started using an ugly, shiny, plastic-like texture on the mechs.

Decent robot which can give me a Cbill bonus

Along with the caveat that PGI hasn't greatly disappointed me with the most recent patch
I haven't bought anything in years.

My main reasons are interest, tankiness, and general weapon capability.
Otherwise:
1. weapon mounts
2. appearance
3. nostalgia

Weapon capability for me is just being able to run a mostly-decent build relatively well. I also want my mechs to be relatively tanky, because for me survivability is paramount over all else and I won't run IS mechs with XL engines, no matter what. I bought Wolfhounds for Cbills, then for real money, because they worked for me. I'd run a ER Large Laser and 3 Medium Lasers on a Standard 220, a mostly decent build with slow-ish but acceptable speed. The real plus is when I lose both side torsos and I'm still a threat on the field, something not everyone expects to see.

All the rest are irrelevant to me because I only drop solo and can't be pressured, I won't buy what doesn't interest me, and I don't do troll. I also won't necessarily run meta, (Ex. Crabs and Wolfhounds) or I may run a meta mech with a less-than-meta build (Ex. A hybrid Molten Metal-M4J35T1C Ebon Jaguar build with max SRM's).

I also preordered the Nightstar, for all my reasons: I pushed for it in TheArisen's thread, it should have tanky, Marauder-esque hitboxes, I'll be able to rip out the XL engines for Light engines with more survivability, and the mounts should be all cockpit height at least, making for good mounts. I also have my own ideas for Nightstar builds, but I'll enhance and modify them with community build elements.

I can't even rank, as it varies.

Some chassis, I buy immediately because it's one I've loved forever (Urbanmech, Phoenix Hawk, Highlander, Kodiak).
Some chassis, I didn't even know about but bought immediately because it looks awesome (Archer)
Some I bought because it was obviously going to be badass (Timberwolf)

So... I'd say reasons I buy a mech are:

Personal affection, looks, capabilities.

I give zero fsck's about what anyone else thinks I should be piloting, so peer pressure is a non-issue. I never buy mechs I'm clueless about - either I already love them, or I know I'll enjoy them, or occassionally (see for eg.: Archer) buy them just because they look so damn cool. I can't rank them, though. It's pretty binary, either I'll buy for real money or not, and it just takes enough of one of those.

I won't even say hardpoint locations or metas - I never buy based on current metas because they change (and I've enough mechs that I can exploit any meta). If I buy based on capability, that's not "ability to meet current meta", it's the mech's ability to adapt to different metas and still be effective. I tend to take a long term view of this aspect.

With the above said, I can't think of many (any?) remaining mechs that'll get a nostalgia buy from me. I've got everything I particularly care about that way. So now it's going to be mostly restricted to mechs that look like they'll be particularly fun to pilot.

Need to add value to that list. For instance, value of Kodiak $20 pack was a no brainer. Most bang for the buck.

Besides that, loadout. Not only weapon mounts, but mobility, durability, and viability as a CARRY HARDER mech. Doesn't need to be meta, since I know the meta will change. Just needs to fit one of my play styles. I get lots of bad solo PUG games, usually keeps me from buying interesting mechs.

I can also add positive game direction to that list. I see positive direction, I open my wallet.

D and G are most important. I hate having just one weapon type. Crap hard point location is a big factor. Who really would want to use a spider 5v with its 2 med ct lasers vs the 5d with has the ecm and arm lasers? I like to mix it up within a chassi. Having one mech that can do it all gets boring.

I did just get the hero urbie based primarily on A because its so dam funny looking. Also got the Panther because it can do jj more.

I don't really have a set reasoning for my purchases. I bought the Bushwacker because I like medium mechs and thought it offered good value (all the mechs came with XL engines). For the Javelin I bought the base package because I was interested in its hardpoints and layout, then upgraded to the collector's edition and the hero mech to support PGI when the uproar about the skill tree went down.

Today I bought the Nightstar because I'm not that good at assault mechs and don't own many (only 7 of my 69 mechs are assaults), but I do like ballistics on my mediums so I figure it'll be a good platform on which to try to get better. I chose to buy the collector's version over the base version largely because that Starry Night themed paint job looks really good.
