Thanks to the likes of u/kyborgi and u/scurro for scraping leaderboard info. This information comes from the Quickplay Leaderboards which is publicly accessible data. Note that this means CW matches and players are not included at all.

Without previous years for comparison there is no way to make an accurate prediction of what the numbers represent.

It's easy to jump to the conclusion the drop is due to the ST, but it could just be a regular summer lull.

Why does the graph start with June/July? Why are two months combined and used for the start point? Since the first season actually includes two months worth of drops it must not be included in the time series data. Remove season 1 from the graph and the overall picture is not nearly as grim as the creators are likely trying to portray it as.

Biased representation of the data is a form of statistical fraud.

These numbers are only going to get worse now that the new balance underlord has proven he doesn't know what he is doing.

so during winter months when, when one is cooped up inside, there were more players than when the weather got nice, and people could go outdoors again.

Correlation, not causation.

Deep dive some real data, with context, and then we are going somewhere. This? About as useful as media polls. Ask Hillary how well those work out.

If we had last years numbers to compare then we could probably see the cause of the slump is the ST release. And the fact they had such high numbers for June/Jul last year and it's steadily trend down over the past year lends some credibility to the argument the ST hurt the game.

However, we do need more data. Preferably three years worth to compare to see how other big changes moved the numbers.

Superimpose that graph with steam's stat and you can extrapolate to a reasonable degree what player numbers have been like for the past 3 years.

MWO is definitely not getting better but nor is it getting worse. Unfortunately, everything PGI is doing nowadays is more to retain players than working to take the game to its full potential.

There's only so much you can do with mech packs and not putting in any effort in map/mode/PVP. Even Hearthstone knew it has to up its game and expansion schedule to keep people from leaving and yet, this Civil War is like the first 'mini expansion' MWO has received since launch - not to mention the FP/CW has been in a neglected beta state since inception also.

Anyway, as long as people are still buying mech packs and heros and stuff, PGI wouldn't need to put in much effort.

Eh, there is a pretty significant number of us who never went over to Steam, so not sure how close we can draw with that. Still, another piece of the puzzle.

The leaderboards would account for steam players while steam doesn't account for all the folks like me who just use the MWO launcher.

I decided not to play as form of statement.
Things have gone to far. Game is in a bad state.
I have played 3+ hour a day from the start of the game. Owner of 15 Hero mechs.
I will look in after the Civil war patch. But until then, i refuse to play.

its been pretty nice on the east coast. mostly 60s-70s. perfect outside weather.

ive been doing a ton of yardwork and fixing up my house. It feels better getting important stuff done than sitting around playing MWO which is a complete waste of time lol.

Yes, but the steam numbers have a longer history - going back to Dec 2015. So if there is correlation with this year's numbers between the steam numbers and the leader boards, it's likely there was correlation in the previous steam numbers as well.
