The consumable artillery more less is the long tom.
There also once actually was a gigantic artillery in siege mode, but they removed it due to it being overpowered.
My advice: see the consumable artillery as the long tom.
Anything beyond that would be too strong, cheesy, you name it.

Proper artillery cannons, Mech Mortars and standard non-homing Arrow missiles would be the one thing that actually changes the current gameplay by introducing unguided indirect fire that can be manually aimed with area effect damage. But it would probably be decried as being overpowered against Light Mechs by nullifying their speed advantage, against groups that like to sit around and hide behind cover, and by teammates that get hit by someone that doesn't know how to aim or indiscriminately fires into a brawl.

Until we get Crit Splitting this will never be a thing, since the cannon eats 15 slots. That being said it is far from op and is really only useful for firing on deathballs/campers, it has less range than the LL (the true artillery with map range is the artillery piece version which is 30 slots unmountable on mechs) will probably have terrible velocity, and it only does 20 damage total per target in the central explosion/10 at the outskirts. For comparison the artillery strike consumable does 35 per shell.

Ya know, the last time the community asked for the Long Tom, and PGI provided their vision of it in the game...it didn't go so well.
So how about we all just walk away from this concept/topic and PGI can pretend it never existed; for all our sakes.

The Thumper Cannon is a strong contender to be added in place of the Long Tom, until crit splitting becomes a thing..

there seems to be a strong adversion to fun weapon mechanics. aoe weapons should totally be a thing. i remember in quake everyone's favorite weapon was the rocket launcher. i presume pgi left it out so the game would be more table top like. bit mistake, i think almost every shooter the weapon with the most splash is the best weapon. the arcing mechanic the ppc uses is ok i suppose. but i like the living legends splashy ppc better (though it was only useful for splattering battle armor). its not just that but every weapon that serves a purpose has that purpose severely limited, narc, tag, ecm, lerms, all so they could dumb down the electonic warfare so that "thinking men" could be smart enough to play the game.
some low hanging fruit might be mech mortars, explosive pod (narc ammo type), arrow iv (i want my cat-c3 damnit), thumper i suppose. mines (make it a consumable). give ppcs realsplash. if we had ammo types we could do a lot of fun things.

Yes, the key part there was... "THEIR VISION OF IT". Thats why it sucked.

Never, since PGI can't actually manage the split-crit mount for it, any of the other artillery cannons, Arrow IV, HGauss, AC/20s...
