If your team is aggressive and focuses on killing the enemy - instead of hiding behind or near the VIP - you have a slight advantage.
Of course most PUGs do the complete opposite of this, making it easy for the enemy to kill the few people that are attacking them, and then focus down the VIP.

The defending team will have a much harder (or even impossible) time on some of the smaller maps (or maps where spawns are closer to each other). You can't get as much time to weaken/destroy the attacking team members before the VIP can be attacked, especially if the VIP decides to walk right down the center.
For example, on Grim Plexus, I was on an attacking team that was able to get line of sight on the VIP, despite the defenders pushing to engage. There was a lot of focus fire and suddenly the VIP was dead. Nobody else on either side died.

1. It gives way his position
2. You can't react to enemy movement, as they are already on top of you and the VIP.
Punch out ahead and away from the VIP. Create a fight away from the VIP. Most peoples brains will default to skirmish, and they will just stand and fight and very likely forget they are even playing escort.
Whatever you do, do not sit at the hip of the VIP. Bring the fight to the other team.

I said "we need to push out and keep the cap zone for our team."
What did my team do? Rush out and stood 100m short of a flipped zone, refused to push and and left it in the enemy's hands, and then COMPLAINED ABOUT THE LRMs.

NOTHING in this game mode makes ANY sense.... Its almost as bad as conquest, where if you know the actual economy of the BT universe whatever that resource we're collecting is it surely cannot be worth 12 mechs and the men/women who've got thousands of training hours just to learn to pilot them...
It would be nice if they came up with a game mode that actually had an objective that seemed worth risking 12 mechs and their pilots to obtain.

Main reason to lose Escort matches is people hiding.
Just had a match on River City where the ViP decided it wanted to go to the bridge. So we set up on the bridge looking into the tunnel from where the ViP is coming from. The ViP came out and we all shot at it, killing it in a few seconds. Meanwhile, the whole enemy team is sitting in the tunnel, behind the ViP. Then they all started to blame the mode and "n00b tryhard enemy team that focuses the ViP" for the loss.

He isn't dropped off, he is already there. The original drophips can't pick him up because of fighter cover, enemy fire, etc. He is an experimental Altas prototype testbed with 500 or so frontal armor. All of your questions answered with a somewhat reasonable way.

You mean like; Taking control of a planetary area. Taking control of a major com array. Taking out an enemy encampment on your planet. Escorting an experimental mech testbed that can potentially change the tide of war. No... not like we have any modes worth 12 mechs (which many would still be recoverable) to complete.
