Give it random spawn locations on existing maps with "set up arena" additions like the Incursion mode but with the doodads of onlookers in their shielded stands and big screen monitors of the top mechs in the fight. It would cut down on some overall work, use "unused parts of the map" that was mentioned plus kudo-points for those using "hot mechs of the day" such as little used mechs and winning with them for bonuses.

Also penalties of mechs not within a radius and refusing to fire on one another in a free for all in a multi-person match. Which can be abused given teamspeak/other chat programs and synch-dropping. This is a major issue in other (famous) games who abuse the system. Like one game getting a free vehicle and rarely got caught for it.

The possible issues to deal with in tablet form:
--FFA being abused with synch drop pals.
--Map size concerns of fast mechs in FFA running away until few enemies remain.
--'That one mech' that wins more matches because of where it usually spawns.

Traits to consider:
--Bonuses for using rarely seen mechs.
--Destroying a mech a certain way, heavies torso, legging lights etc.
--Arena placement on any map in any rarely fought locations.
--Weapon use competitions "medium laser day" or something similar.
--Support damage to having kills stolen being rewarded and noted. (Was a big fuss in MW4 Merc FFA in my memory)
--Remove certain weapons such as streaks and have zero consumables.
--Possibly having NO skills and playing with stock skilled mechs to entice new players to use the mode and super builds being reconsidered (laservomit being one).
--Maybe allow any mech not purchased for a different direction for "the mech of the day you want to try" on the same cooldown as a 24hour premium time. (this works along with the no skill part)

Just my three cents, I always put one to many in there.

From an old joke post but what I would like mostly.

---

1. Coming in a month or so.

2. Arenas include the classics.... Boreal Reach, The Factory, Ishiyama, The Jungle, Steiner Coliseum and Solaris Stables. Not all maps will be ready when it is released.

3. Yes there will be betting of cbills and possibly mechs later on.

4. Yes it will have leader boards both over all and per game mode.

5. Yes it will have Duncan Fisher.

6. Yes it will have several game modes. Modes will include free for all. 12 2 man team free for all. Also 1vs1 - 2vs2 - 4vs4 - 6vs6 and 12vs12.

7. Some aspects maybe need require premium time depending on community feedback etc.

8. There will be special prizes like custom camo and titles and war horns you can only get in this game mode much like CW.

9. The top ranked players can also win MC.

10. Top matches will be recorded and promoted by PGI on the website.

11. One problem could be april first.

12. Stock mech modes.

13. PGI run tournaments of top players after it is out two or three months.

flat out pay to play, not interested.

pay for early access, tolerable but disappointing.

limited use model, like 5 games a day for non payers, maybe it can work.

free but supported by solaris mech/weapon packs on the current mech pack model, maybe.

I like this. Also, create a free spectator mode.

its what i call the kingdom of loathing model. in kol you are limited by how many turns you can take every day. if you donate to the game you get an item that grants you more turns. of course its also a game that has a forum where you can only talk in haiku.

I didn't watch the town hall, but do I understand it correctly that Russ is suggesting a paid game mode for whales only? Then it's a firm "NO" from me. And the reason is - because MWO doesn't have regional pricing that would take into account the level of income in different parts of the world. Right now it's not an issue, because the F2P model used by MWO allows you to play completely free. You can buy a mechpack or an MC pack every once in a while, but you're not required to. However, if they introduce a paid-only mode, it will essentially become an exclusive mode available only to players from North America and Western Europe (and maybe a few other well-developed countries with a comparable level of income).

That wasn't my impression. It sounded like they want to sell pre-order goodies to 'fund' the development of the mode. Perhaps something like kickstarter with stretch goals for features.

1v1
2v2
Match viewing
cbill gambling (even with small limits)
handfull of small new maps
Free viewing option so friends can at least watch your matches.
Changeable rules. Option like no flamers or streaks.

I will buy this.

From what I heard it sounds like it's going to be ftp. However, it sounds like it's going to be one of those pointless "early access" moves that Ubisoft did with For Honor with their new heroes. Still, I would rather pay for mechs than something like map features for a new Solaris mode.

I need to catch up on the townhall it seems, but will admit, this is dissapointing. MWO is already pretty much just an arena shooter. Adding Solaris seems like a rather meh thing IMHO. I mean, at least it is different, and Solaris is an actual arena... what about more in depth stuff, instead of condesning our arena shooter, into an actual arena...

MWO on Unreal Engine 4 > everything else at this point.

No point of Solaris if there isn't a replay feature like paragon for community content creation and highlight reels.

I doubt I would ever play a Solaris style match. I like team games instead of 1v1, 2v2 arena style modes.

Whats concerning is the fact they are saying they don't have enough funds to work on such a project. Which is a pretty good indication of how little sales they are making. I wonder when they are going to realize they could sell more mechs if the fundamental game was more fun to play. Fun being things the players want to see instead of what Russ and Paul think should be accepted.

If it were like in Brawlers Guild in WoW...

-Collectively spectating matches in a cantina sort of environment while queued together.

-Betting on winners.

-Paying for exhibition-style FFAs where everyone in queue is thrown into a match

-VIP section for "Solaris Champions" while the plebs have to spectate from the nosebleeds.

That would be a winner for me.

A lot of people on this forum really seem to love hating on any suggested payment option for content without offering any suggestion on how said content can be monetized in order to, you know, fund development for said content. Paying salaries for the entire development team is extremely expensive, and it has to have a way to fund itself with the productivity. Solaris will need its own maps, its own UI, its own sound and graphical effects, probably its own mechs, and it absolutely needs to have quality voice acting. That's a hell of a lot of salaries to pay, and there's no way in hell that giving it away for free is going to fund it. If the players aren't willing to do it then it simply wont happen, and we get to go back to monthly mech packs because they provide proven stable funding for the current level of development. The Urbie had to get a hell of a lot of preorder support to get funded because light mechs repeatedly failed to monetize well even though they cost just as much to make. Solaris is the same, on a much bigger scale.

And no, an empty statement like "make the core game better" is not a monetization suggestion, or even a development suggestion. It's simple negativity that offers nothing, and is exactly why the developers "don't listen" to you. Any suggestion you want to be heard needs to take into account development costs, technical limitations, opposing community opinions, effects on balance, and most importantly you need to be respectful about it. No company in any market is going to take business suggestions from spiteful, aggressively negative people who line every suggestion with "you all suck and fail at life" like a child throwing a tantrum. The forums fail to do this so often that it's very easy to see why PGI doesn't interact with them more.

TL;DR: Yes, I would absolutely help put down preorder money to prove to PGI that developing Solaris is financially viable, and I would encourage everyone who wants to ever see it happen do the same because it wont pay for itself.

Well, they could try Solaris as a Stepping Stone for porting MWO from Cryengine to Unrel Engine and make it a better balanced game with all the lessons learned and release it as MWO 2.0 then.

I believe in the "Second Chance" but you have to take it wisely!

And i'd probably not do that.

I would definitely support transferring to UE4 from this butchered abomination of a Cryengine. I'd fund the **** outta it.
Especially if it came with complementary quads.

  • 10 players FFA, everyone's on their own
  • Map: Solaris Coliseum. Dynamic cover pops up/down from the ground, lights attached to it change color to signal cover blocks movement.
  • Week long event/game mode
  • For the duration of the event players allowed to play specified chassis. For example, this week everyone plays Banshee 3E, players can use whatever loadout they want but in order to enter the queue they must use Banshee 3E
  • Leaderboards. Hiding the entire game won't work, you'll need high score in order to be ranked high on the leaderboard.
  • MC rewards for the top 10 players
  • C-bills and MC (mechbays) sink
