Of course, with LFEs on the way, that's going to throw a gigantic monkey wrench in my smug sense of completionist satisfaction. I have about a dozen 'Mechs that are slated for immediate retrofitting and only enough cbills for half that many (assuming I sell some of the engines I have on hand)... nevermind the RACs, MRMs, and other goodies I'm gonna have to buy.
Which wouldn't be a problem if I had the playtime in the next month or so to address the cbill deficiency...

Just waiting for new tech and the MC II pack that I won arriving next month, so I can spend C-Bills on them.

It's kinda sad,...
Seriously, I'm only leveling my mechs the hard way to see how the expanding tree affects gameplay. For the next 100+ mechs I buy I don't need to though.

Same here. 2 quickies, 1 dragon, 4 thunderbolts, 3 maybe 4 of my jaggers, 2 catapults, 4 phracts, 2 warhammers, 2 black knights, 3 marauders, maybe 2 victors, 2 zeus, 1 awesome, etc. All are getting LFE refits. I don't think 100m is going to cover it. Start slow I guess. Hmm...then there are new weapons. Crap.

I'd rather use IS XL on a XL friendly mech, than to have a light engine on a mech with bad hitboxes.

Look, no one is trying to say that LFE or LFF are THE BEST THING EVER. But they will do something the current options cannot do.
Will LFF be a game changer? Hell no. Will LFF allow mechs with 10 crit slots open to bring another ton of armor/ammo/heatsink? Yes. Will LFE be a game changer? For many mechs, it will greatly increase their top speeds and/or weapons load. Will LFE make IS mechs as fast as clan mechs? No. Will LFE allow IS mechs to go faster/equip more guns/ammo without becoming one-shots to the ST? Yes.
Comparing apples to oranges won't help. We have to look at the heavy STD Engine, and the fragile XL engine. Clan XL does not matter. Can't put a clan XL into an IS mech. And in that environment, LFE will be quite impactful. Your suggestion to "just use XL-friendly mechs" only perpetuates the age-old problem MWO has: Bad chassis vs. good chassis. Abandoning the bad mechs as if they don't matter for balance is very shortsighted. But getting a King Crab up to speed while still boating a lot of guns, that's an advantage. Getting a Crab to become resilient to ST loss, that's an advantage (that even allows that mech to dead side!). In numbers, too. With ST armor being two thirds of front armor, your hit points now increased by 33% if not 50%.
So, yeah. LFE's a bit of a big deal.
