Hi everyone,
I've been playing clan only, I think I'm going to get a few of the IS sale mechs with the upcoming updates and all. Thinking about getting variants of the enforcer, grasshopper, black knight and maybe a crab. I figure I'll kit them out after the new tech comes in.
So far on clan side I've liked laser and ballistics, and haven't liked clan PPCs and gauss. So recommendations for any variants on sale I should look at, stay away from, that you feel will especially benefit from the upcoming tech, or that you just especially like because they're fun, would be appreciated, thanks.
Fore reference the sale mechs are all variants of:
WOLFHOUND
PANTHER
CRAB
ENFORCER
BLACK KNIGHT
GRASSHOPPER
MAULER
ZEUS
KING CRAB

I am not going to explecitly recomend a Mech but I will give a breif breakdown of what they do, then make up your own mind.
Wolfhound is a fast and durable Light Mech, only armed with E hardpoints.
Panther is a slower Light, usualy designed around PPCs and SRMs, but there is nothing to stop you putting lasers and LRMs or SSRMs on it.
Crab is an energy boat, pretty fast and durable for a 50 tonner
Enforcer is energy and balistics, not as durable as the Crab but more XL freindly
Black Knight is all energy weapons, I have not played it enough recently to say much more
Grasshopper, mostly energy with 1-2 missile hardpoints, can jump reasionably durable
Mauler a good mix of energy, balistic and missile, hardpoints depend on the varient, is rather slow but can be an extremely powerful short to mid range fire support Mech.
Zeus is a fast but not especialy durable assualt Mech, weapons vary a lot depending on varient
King Crab not very durable for a 100 tonner but has great firepower with 2x AC20 or gauss + tonage for decent backup weapons.

Thanks.
One thing you mentioned, isnt the xl engine basically going away for IS with the new engine type that's coming? I'm sure people will still have them, but if your outfitting a new mech it looks like the new engine would be a lot better choice over an XL.

not realy, if anything the Light Fusion will replace the Standard engine.
an LFE has a 25% tonage reduction on a standard engine, it only takes 2 slots in each side torso allows a Mech to suvive 1 side torso loss like the Clan XL.
the XL engine weighs half what a standard engine does, but the Mech dies if you loose ether side torso.
the XL will still be essential for many light and medium Mechs. there are some heavy Mechs in which I rarely loose a side torso so there would be little point in loosing 5-15 tons for negligable suvivability increase
the Standard engine weighs a lot more than a LFE or XL, but can suvive loosing BOTH side torsos, how often do Clan Mechs take a standard engine? I am not sure if anyone has found a good build for a Clan standard engines. so the only reason someone is likely to take a standard engine is if they are taking Heavy Gauss (uses too many slots for an LFE or XL to fit).
I am sure the XL will become less common but for example an Enforcer would sacrifice 4 tons by switching from an XL250 to a LF250 Engine, on a 50 ton Mech that is a huge tonage diferance.

Ok, thanks again. I thought it was basically a IS version of the XL, or would essentially serve that way.
in lore it is essentialy the IS answer to the Clan XL, lighter than the standard but able to suvive loosing a side torso, however because Clan tech is about 300 years more advanced than IS tech they could not get the same weight savings.

I think I would switch most of my XL into LFE, by dropping of something else or taking lower rated engine. Even with some okay mechs XL is simply so big vunerability. I only have the XL because I really need the speed.
Maybe Locust and some really small mechs could keep their XL.

Got me a Black Knight. Painted him white just to troll.
Got a King Crab for cbills. Got it again as the Steam version alongside the DWF W [S].
Sold all non-cbill-bonus Dire Wolves and bought 3 Maulers. Used 3,000 out of 4,000 MC I gained from the Steam assault pack to get an Assassin hero. And I still got a crap load of cbills left.
