Sorry for the newb question, but how is pilot tier determined? I've noticed at the end of matches it will sometimes go up and sometimes go down. Are there specific behaviors (besides just getting kills) that will help me raise this?
Thanks for the help!

Also, follow-up question: Does the game mix pilot tiers? Will a tier 5 pilot ever play a game with a tier 4 pilot, etc?
Again, thanks for the help!

The best way to go up in PSR ("pilot skill rating" or "tier") is to win. Most of the time, if you win you will go up.
If you lose you can still go up by doing a lot of damage/getting a lot of kills.
The whole system is weighted so that if you do a little above average you will go up over time.
As for your second question, when the matchmaker is active, you will tend to be matched primarily against players at or close to your tier level. However, the matchmaker is not always active due to population levels, and is never active in the group queue, and even when active it does not prevent tier 5 from being matched against tier 1, but just makes it less likely.

If you win and contribute it will go up.
If you win and get a very small match score it will stay the same.
If you lose with under 200 match score it will go down
If you lose with 200-300 match score it will stay the same
If you lose and get 400+ it will go up
All the numbers are rough estimates from memory. I'm not positive on the exact thresholds but its right around there.
