Since skills are attached to specific mechs the specific skill data set is also deleted.
Compared to the rule-of-3 this is a step backwards since you cannot retain skills as before.

But if I purchase an older mech, which I had levelled pre skill tree, it has historic SP and XP attached, so if the data is deleted, why does it retain this info? Have you physically tried this personally?

I sold a mech with a ton of xp on it right before the skill tree update.
I thought that xp and modules were gone forever.
Then I picked up a different version of that same chassis on the steam sale.
It had all that previous historical XP on it from my last mech.
So. I dont really know for sure, but I think it sticks.

The fact old pre skill tree mechs retain HXP and HSP, would indicate that it is entirely possible to save mech data even when sold, so if it does delete the info my question is why?

IDK.
Maybe they felt bad about xp** gating?

Selling a mech with SP spent and SP waiting to be spent, those WILL BE DELETED.
You will however retain all the HXP/HSP that is unconverted... For some reason.
Just tested with one of my cheaper lights.

The HSP / HXP will still be there. Confirmed when I re-purchased a NVA-S and it had both XP and SP waiting for me.

Because these are part of the "Refund Ledger" and exist separate from your 'mech until you assign it to one.

Yep, so my question becomes, why can they not put those SP or that mechs data onto a ledger or the same ledger when one is sold? It's not a question directed at you though, so I am not expecting you to answer, it is just the question remaining.

Easily answered. I could put 91 SP into that 'mech, then I could sell that and just buy 20 more copies of it, to get "free" SP on every one of them. Claimed HSP / HXP is essentially "spent".

Assuming they would assign that set to every new mech, rather than create an individual profile for each purchased mech I guess, the storage space couldn't be that vast for data storage, but perhaps I am wrong.
By that same logic, every new mech we purchase could have all of the unspent HSP and HXP duplicated freely at the purchase, there is just a distinction within that stops it, which is the "ledger".

Exactly, you can buy 20 of the same, previously Mastered 'mech now, however you could only claim 91 HSP before you need to start using GSP or buying new SP.

I can see the issue that you are referring to, but I just can't really think of a good reason why they couldn't do the ledger process in reverse for sold mechs, adding the SP profile to the ledger, and then re adding it to the next time that mech is purchased but only once, then remove the profile from the ledger and add it to the mech, any future mechs wouldn't get a duplicated profile because it is "spent" already, unless you sold that mech again. Selling more mechs would just queue them up in the ledger for future repurchases.

I guess to try and sell more Mech Bays? I mean, if you can just sell a 'mech and buy it back at full strength and there's no more requirement to purchase 3 'mechs, there's less reason to have so many 'mech bays.
