Pretty sure a bot would perform better than the joystick + Toshiba laptop potatoes out there in the wild, though..

I got my first headshot kill today. Pushed a phract into a corner, got right in his face and KERPLOW. I bet that dude **** himself!

I don't really go for headshots, I'm usually trying to take whatever group of weapons is pissing me off the most.

No one around here knows for sure really. It's alot of allegations. My guess is there are not however. Just not a game you can farm really well with existing software given the lack of lock-on capability that drives orientation.

Also, don't believe at all that there used to be a ton of "c-bill bots" out there. There might have been a handful of people experimenting with something that had drop into game, die, redrop into another match etc when the base rewards were higher, but that's long since been crushed and I cannot imagine it was many. And even then, it couldn't have been all that profitable compared to actually playing since the c-bills rewards/matchscore are so heavily tied to damage/kills/components and winning.

It really is kind of annoying, isn't it? For the first couple of years of this game, people would constantly call bad players "PUGs" (even though technically everyone outside an 8-man is a PuG). Nobody ever used this term Potato.

Now suddenly everyone parrots the term Potato like some sort of cool in-the-know tribal passcode.

The thinking apparently is that if you're clever enough to call other people Potatoes, you surely must be smarter and better at the game than they are.

The irony being, if you're clever enough to mimic the term Potato, you're also probably the same sort of player who typically follows the Potato herd right to its lemming doom. You're an average group-thinker who gets average or below average scores in most matches.

TLDR: The more you call others Potatoes, the more likely you are one yourself.

A week ago I lost a game on grim plexus. There were only 2 players alive on our team. A trenchbucket and a panther. I watched the trenchbucket and the movemen pattern, targeting and weapon usage was very very strange. Then I switched to spectate the panther and it used nearly exactly the same strange patterns. Switched between the two mechs till they were rolled by the enemy team and the behavior pattern was strange and identical.
Are there bots in QP? Is this commen and does anyone else experience such strange patterns?

Doesn't look like anything to me

very unlikely. Both mechs only used the medium lasers and always fired em exactly at the same range +\- 0m over and over again. No matter if someone of the own team or cover was in between. If they lost lock they started moving randomly till they got a lock. When they got a lock they had exactly the same forward and backward movement and fire pattern without any care for the terrain. There was no torso movement at all. I would have believed it was a potato if it would have been only one mech, but 2 with exactly (I really mean EXACTLY by timing and actions) the same patterns over and over again in the same drop? Very unlikely!

I came across a mech way back (3 years ago perhaps?) that was behaving in such a bizarre manner that I think it's extremely possible it was a bot of some sort.

It was a light mech (possibly a Locust). I can't remember the weapons loadout, but it had 14,000 rounds of machine gun ammo, which was the first thing I noticed. The second was the control inputs - it was as if each input was being cycled through individually, one press at a time. It would move forwards with no torso movement or aiming at all, then stop. Then there would be a single torso movement. A single burst of machine gun fire. The R button would be pressed. It would make a quick turn on the spot. Then run forwards again and continue in this weird cycle of actions that were made with no noticed paid to the environment. It was would run into walls, get stuck on rocks, etc.

It was the strangest thing I've ever seen in this game and everything about it felt inhuman - I've seen some scary potatoes out there, but everything about this was robotic. It was bizarre and mesmerizing and I wish I had video.

"Potato" gets used as a term because frankly, more descriptive terms frequently are censored by the forums.

Watching someone alpha strike a trio of ER PPCs on Polar in their Nova, shutting down repeatedly after the first few triple-taps until an enemy light finally got to it and shredded it...

Well, it was just painful stupid to watch. "Potato" is the nicest way I can describe it.

Yeah its still an insult it is just catered to all audiences, it would be like calling someone a spoon or a spanner, asserting they have a specific functionality but no real capacity for intelligence outside of that. The potato metaphor fits well in many ways, in how it suggests a player just sits there until being eaten, probably getting very salted just before said eating.

But yeah it's just a surface level insult that adds nothing to any particular discussion or communication without context or explanation, like noob etc.

There's no way there are bots in this game. First off, PGI isn't smart enough to program bots into the game. They are going to steer clear of bots if at all possible. Why, you may ask? Because if they can and did use bots, there would be no excuse as to why we couldn't have the single player mechwarrior game that everyone has been pining for since the beginning of time.

Not to mention the fact that if they could do a decent "bot" then someone needs to share that with the folks who are responsible for the Escort Atlas's movement parameters.
