So I got the Battlemaster Mastery pack. It's a fun mech.
BLR-1S: Quirks suggest a medium laser/SRM brawler, and it seems to work nicely at that.
BLR-1G: Can go alot of ways, but playing off the quirks I went with a GR/LL/ML setup.
BLR-2C(C): Lot of ways you could go with it, I ended up LPL/MPL. It is a great over-hill poker.
But then, the HELLSLINGER... what the heck have you guys ended up doing with this thing? I like building a mech around quirks, but this one... eh... I just don't like a PPC/missile boat. Here's what we have to work with:
50% External Heat Transfer (apparently REDUCES the benefit of cold maps?? -that sucks)
+14 Armor on Left/Right arms
20% PPC velocity
5% Energy heat
10% PPC cooldown
15% Missile cooldown
What I'm toying with is:
All PPC boat: link
PPC/LRM boat: link

Play on hot maps... You'll see the benefit.
Night Gyrs are supposed to have the same effect but at 100%. I don't own one so I don't know if it is true or not. (Basically no benefit cold maps, but on hot maps an energy Night Gyr would be king, assuming that they do have this quirk).

Less affected by environment temperature, so mech's performance is most identical across all map.
One of the more popular map is tourmaline desert, which is hot and have many open space.

The Hellslinger will be pretty fun with the new PPCs that are being released July 18.
The 50% external heat transfer isn't really a positive or negative. It flattens out how your mech performs from map to map, but players tend to vote for cold maps more often than hot ones (Tourmaline is really the only common hot map).

Hellslinger
The idea is to stay with the flock in early game and use the PPCs to soften up the enemy and then when it gets close and personal having enough alpha to get the kills you earned.
Also seeing the paniced reaction of lights going for an easy kill versus and PPC Assault is always priceless when they get the first tripple ASRM6 right to their face.
Remember to skill 3xRadardep and 7pts for coolant flush. Rest is up to you.

BLR-3M
All the other variants suck compared with the awesomeness that is the 3M. While not as overpowered as before the nerfs and skill change, it is still a viable mech due to its balanced weapon layout. Gauss acts as your range beater and a perfect compliment to switching between 4 medium lasers and 2 large pulse lasers. Only reason you want LPLs over PPCs is because PPCs generate too much heat.
Putting all your toys on your torso means you'll be exposing your torso that much more while giving enemies more reason to simply core you. Poptarting is also a one-trick pony to a certain extent. And also your ability to "lead" enemies is rather restricted as opposed to arm-mounted weapons which can track them to the edge of your mech's cockpit.

I'm currently messing around with a brawler type. X2 Snub nosed PPC, X3 SRM6s. 299 max optional on the PPCs and 299 max on SRMs. Match made in heaven? I guess I could downgrade to SRM 4s and give myself other stuff, but just messing around with the Hellslinger ATM.

Hellslinger is definitely my favorite mech. This is what I'm currently running.

The spread on the MRMs isn't bad at all and the ERMlas, while warm, make up for it (IMHO) with the added range.

I ended up going with LT375, 1xMRM40, 1xSNPPC, 3xML on my Hellslinger.
It's not a particularly great build, but in some very specific situations it can get the job done. I think the strongest Battlemasters are easily the 1G, 3M, 3S, and 2C loaded with laser vomit.
