Is "case" worth the slot and weight since if one torso goes, the mech goes?

No. In MWO it does nothing for you.

Now, in Tabletop, it would still preserve the mech for salvage, and was a serious consideration if you were looking at any sort of mechforce campaign aside from a brigand band or dirt poor merc group who owned their own mechs and were thus willing to throw away the potential to save a coupla a million cbills on a loss for that little extra edge, since they wouldn't be around to benefit.

'Life is cheap, Mechs aren't.' A not uncommon saying in the 'Sphere. Even engine-less, a salvageable mech is a whole pile of cbills.

With an XL Engine? Absolutely not.

You said it yourself, if the Torso goes, the case does nothing for you as your mech is destroyed.

Case is almost never worth it period. There are (or were??) some MX90 builds where it kinda makes sense, but most folks still leave it at home,

CASE makes a great repair and rearm concern. It can also be useful if you're carrying a BOATLOAD of ammo or some ST Gauss Rifles with an upcoming LFE.

(Those who are new and not in the know; the Clan mechs do not require CASE as each bodypart is independently "enCASEd." )

In Repair and rearm, CASE is extremely handy. In MWO since R&R was removed in 2012, CASE hasn't got any use for XL engine users. CASE remains in the stock builds with XL engines because they are stock. For example the Atlas K. In MWO it's like 13 million. In Battletech, the XL 300 engine for a 100 ton mech, alone, costs over 12 million cbills and without CASE, the engine would be completely destroyed on an ST loss. The actual mech costs over 26 million in BT.
