I've been holding off on a Roughneck until the new tech drops. I have plans for the 2A and the 3A. =)

I run one daily and many other I play with do as well but I will agree to that. I may see 1 ever 20-30 matches.
It is currently a pay for only mech so I assume that is part of the reason why.
For example I never saw the assassin until it went up for C-bills. Also never saw the Javelin until snuggles did a video on how awesome it was.
We should start seeing them more once they can be bought for f2p players.

I did allot of testing in the PTU with my roughnecks as I got the collectors pack. If you have questions id be glad to answer them.

Which gets a 'yea no' from me.

You know how many mechs were "invented" by Microsoft for MW4: Vengeance?

The 3067 TRO containing the Mad Cat Mk. 2, Uziel, Chimaera, Hellspawn, Osiris, Thanatos wasn't published until 2002, shortly before the release of MW4 Mercenaries.

I'm mostly looking at pairing an Ultra/10 or RAC/5 with an MRM-30 on the 2A in those lovely shoulder mounts, as those weapon systems seem to pair well. But I only tested it on a Thunderbolt with lower mounts as that's all I owned.

I see em a lot. As targets I find them to be tough, even perhaps tougher than they ought to be. I may buy one, but I have too damn many 65 ton mechs as it is.

As far as lore/cannon or its lack thereof...why on earth should that bother anyone?

There is absolutely zero relationship between BT cannon and the rest of the mechs in this game; or hell this game as a whole. I mean seriously, do Jaggers have an anti-aircraft role like in lore/cannon? Is the Orion held on a pedestal due to its association with Kerensky like in lore? Are mediums and lights the most common mechs? Do clanners disdain the use of mercs? De we even have a fedcom for our current civil war?

You're turning your nose up to the Roughneck due to it being a "fantasy" PGI made up mech? Well ya may as well turn your nose up to MWO then too. Now excuse me, I am going to go play my Quickdraw; one of my dozens of personally owned and operated mechs. Hopefully the weak and easily damaged ankle structures from lore won't be too much of an issue for me while I go fight as an FRR merc working for house Liao this week.

Also waiting for the new weapons. Dual UAC10 seemed to do well without only the Skill Tree UAC jam chance nodes on PTS.

But, that may change on the live servers with 12v12 latency. For the event I'm running a TBR-C with full C Omnipods to get the 20% jam reduction, and both Skill Tree nodes. One UAC10 and 2 LPL. Jamming as often as the Roughneck on the PTS. At least the Roughneck had the second one to keep firing as I found cover to let the jams clear.

I was under the impression it was now Canon as a nod to all the work Alex has done.

However, this is seemingly the only comment I can see from someone at Catalyst:

http://bg.battletech...1&topic=55720.0

It also isn't in Catalyst's master unit list.

Yet PGI in their FAQ refer to it as a new Canon mech:

Quote

Q: Is this a new 'Mech? I've never heard of the Roughneck chassis before.
The Roughneck is an all-new, canon chassis designed from the ground-up by Alex Iglesias and Piranha Games.

I did some fun testing with the 1b with shoulder MRMs and RAC2s
On the 2A a Ultra 10 and MRMs is fun but take advantage of the center mounted lasers.
Surprising on the 3A the most effective build is just 4 ER large lasers.

Add me in game ill run with you sometime I play daily.

They way I see it about canon and mechs is when a new game of anything (Halo, Fallout, Witcher) comes out they new game will add in new lore and items that where not around in the last game. Saying ahh well I dont consider the roughneck to be canon even tho it is is simply just you not wanting to accept the future. Somewhat like saying Darth maul died in phantom menace and I dont count clone wars or rebels because my opinion matters to the legitimacy of canon.

No kidding, I bought the standard pack yesterday. I figured I could use the free paint job from the event on them, and I like my Shadow Hawks.

I suck at piloting heavys, but I think the LFE will be great in these! Pack in some firepower.

I like it. AC20 on a high shoulder mount, 2 SRM6+A on the opposite shoulder, MGs in each arm and a ML in the head. Throw on all the survival skills and it is a real beast. Typically I take it for a spin on a regular basis.

I am looking forward to 2 RACs in the shoulder, LFE and MRMs.

PGI made it up, and Catalyst honorarily cannonized it as official BattleTech Universe content

This.

Basically when PGI introduced it, everyone and their brothers, sisters, cousins, friend grabbed a pitch fork and a torch while their cousins, aunts, uncles, neighbor grabbed tar and feathers and all of them starting looking for Russ with haste. In order to prevent PGI from being burnt to the ground, the creator of the Battletech universe hastily canonized it in interest of world peace.

its a pretty decent mech...high mounted hardpoints, armour and structure quirks. Just doesn't have any weapon quirks, average torso twist and isn't fast packing a max 315 engine (same speed as the Thunderbolt).

I mean I'll play it, but as is I feel like it truly isn't a Canon Mech until it makes an appearance in a new Battletech novel, which is very soon I hope.

It's a great mech, it's Apocypha until it's in a TRO though, just like the Mauler was. It certainly has more history than the Mauler ever did.

It's an awesome mech, it's the only mech I own that I play every variant of. I can build a good Roughneck for every variant.

Side torsos are vulnerable, CT is too, but gets some armor quirks so it plays ok. So XL engines make it fragile, but arms offer some protection. Needs AMS or it takes a beating, losing the side torsos. A good mech with a ST engine, maybe LF engines will be interesting.

Lore-wise it is consistent with stories of the first mechs being converted industrial mechs.

Wait, what? I thought the Roughneck was disliked because it was a design from the aborted "clicky tech" era of Battletech. Basically, FASA or Catalyst or whoever owned Battletech at the time tried to skip the BT timeline forward a century to reset the setting; this time period was known as the Dark Ages.

The Roughneck was a Dark Ages design. It was hated by lore nerds because it was a 32nd century mech that didn't even exist in the 31st century which is when MWO is set.

Am I completely wrong here?

Yes, you are wrong.

Industrial 'Mech's are not "unique" to the Dark Ages. They have always been in the background of the Battletech fiction. Sometimes prominently. (Aidan fought off a dark caste raid in an Agro mech, they are sighted in Succession war books, etc.)

Just because they never appeared in a TRO till much later didn't mean they didn't exist until the Dark Ages. And even in the Dark Ages, it made sense when you looked at the fiction at the time of release. (Quickly cobbled together arms for quick insurrections by pocket factions.) People just didn't like that it was a total "bait and switch" when what they wanted was more of the classic battletech mechs in pre-painted miniature form.
