That's not shocking.

The game currently has 409 mechs. There are very few mechs that are going to offer something new that you can't do on one of the 409 existing mechs. They're really just selling nostalgia at this point.

No one is nostalgic for a newly created mech.

Ill buy the variant with 5 energy points up high. That one seems to be decent. As with most IS mechs, the Roughneck relies too much on quirks. Quirks that could be nerfed on any future patches now that it will be available for C-Bills. The upcoming Hellbringer-P is so much superior in comparison, even with zero quirks.

That's it for me too; the uncertainty.

I would have shelled out for this, was prepared to shell out for this (I love the look and general usability) - until I saw the quirks, which are fantastic. And it's those quirks that make me hesitate, because if the 4SP is anything to go by, actual ingame performance does not seem to correlate with the adjustments of quirks that appear to be extravagant.

Doesn't surprise me since there's no nostalgiabux to cash in on with the Rougneck.

I got a pack anyway, since I'm new to the series and a real sucker for the Industrial/shoulder cannon look. The Reaver's shaping up to be one of my better heavies.

I personally didn't purchase it because the reinforcements we're the variants I liked the most and I'm not paying $35_$55 to get the Mechs I actually like. Actually not liking the bonus c-bills variant/hero of most packages has prevented me from purchasing many Mechs after I felt burned by overlord package.

Allowing us to pick 3 of 5 for the $20-40 would get me spending.
Allowing us to pick what mech has the c bill bonus would get me spending.
Allowing purchase of hero outright would get me spending.

Legend founder (happy, very happy)
Phenix overlord (custom Geo is a detriment )
Bushwacker+hero (heart the hero, rest are meh)
Muraduer collection (energy draw =refund)
Warhammer+hero(energy draw refund)
Uziel collection (artwork bait and switch = refund)
Annihilator collection (civ war bait and switch without apology = refund)

I'll keep buying small amount of MC on sale for myself and others and I'll probably get the tournament supporters but for the most part spending money on this game rarely feels like good value to me)

People spend money on items they identify with. Madcat was iconic because of MW2 posters. Highlander has that DFA thing despite other big mechs with JJs. Atlas's skull face and backstory is just badass. The Warhammer pack was the only time I put money to PGI because I loved the design as a kid both in Macross and Battletech.

What does the Roughneck have? It's only claim to fame is being that mech PGI made up so no wonder it didn't sell. If you don't put the effort into breathing life into your creation, why would players be interested in a generic humanoid robot? PGI's been riding the coat tails of decades worth of BT backstory and player's own personal table top experience for so long, they though any robot with the MWO IP and a paragraph of background text would transform it instantly into another Marauder. Talk about minimal effort.

Well, it was a mech in a bloated class with nothing unusual to sell it, making it not very attractive to casual players and it broke a taboo about industrial mechs becoming battlemechs that didn't start happening until the not well received Jihad years so the purists were not interested.

Of course it sold poorly. IS players are getting sick and tired of mechs with crappy hard points -- regardless of how pretty they look. Give us an ugly IS mech with 13 energy points and a couple of high mount points and people will buy the Shart out of it -- even if it looks like a cube on legs.

It didn't sell well because it requires a lot of quirks to perform average, quirks that will be removed soon™.

I expect mechpacks in general arnt selling well anymore

PGI hasnt done nearly enough to differentiate mechs so theres no reason to keep buying mechs

so basically power creep

thats not really a solution either

what PGI needs to do is come up with a better way to vastly differentiate two otherwise similar mechs

its plainly obvious that quirks dont work in that capacity, or any other capacity really

I've been waiting on the new tech for a Roughneck. The 2A will pair up an Ultra AC/10 with an MRM30 in those high shoulder mounts, which is something few enough other mechs can do. So they'll peel some MC off me shortly.

Sized Hardpoints. Combine it with location based quirks. Tons of variety. :)

Yes, there was some hate. So what? There are always some malcontents. I think they were a minority and I certainly would not blame them for bad sales. That's an excuse, and a convenient one, because instead of searching for the actual reasons you can just blame a minority. Unfortunately that works too well.

G'ahead, figure out the reason. No one's stopping you. I'm just pointing out that there was a lot of bile spewed all over the Roughneck when it was announced. That certainly did not help things.

Only reason i dont have 1 is cause im a F2P and i just dont have the cash to buy much of anything in videogames...

That said, its defenetely one im gonna get once its out for CB, since it looks to have a few interesting builds and relatively favorable hitboxes too...

Um, yeah, obviously no one stopped me when I presented my opinion on that, in this very thread. Of course it required a little more text than the "those evil haters!" of yours. Posted Image

Perfect, if not many people bought them then that means they aren't popular enough that PGI would hit them with the nerf bat like they do with everything that gets common.

I might just be able to get the world's tankiest 65 tonner before nerf and have it have civil war era tech ontop of that. It can't come out for cbills soon enough.

It's not like something I made it up. It did happen. I remember being incredibly disappointed that people were raging so hard over it. Indigent that PGI would dare. It's not like I'm exaggerating. There was outright indignation over it! Sorry I didn't wax poetic over it. But opinions aside it's a fact that it was met with angry backlash initially, which thankfully waned eventually. But we still got the occasional rude stuff.

In contrast, MkII sold super well, turned out such a disappointment aesthetically.

It looks less out of place than the original TBR did. I mean, seriously, this is a monstrosity:

Those damn skinny arms and legs. That oversized, bulbous torso. WTF is with that?
