I've been giving this game a try for the last couple weeks and while I typically don't play PvP games I was enjoying myself despite regular losses. I took the Arctic Cheetah Prime standard loadout and got to 89/91 skill points. It's a fairly newby friendly mech since it's only 1 type of weapon and has ecm with good maneuverability.
Unfortunately the patch today has changed all that. Now I fire my weapons twice and overheat. Sadly I am unwilling to work up another mech simply to see it become worthless as well. Is there a problem with the patch or is this the final answer?

What exactly is your build? I'm not exactly sure what would have been changed in the new patch to make you go from being fine to overheating in 2 shots. If you're using all ER Smalls, then that's only .5 heat per laser that was added in the patch.

Try 4 MPL's, they got lower heat now..

Wow, so even new people come into this game being rigid and salty. I thought that was only the metuh tryhards.

Maybe you alpha-fired it twice hence you overheat?

My personal experience is that skills make great mechs op, good mechs great, bad mechs decent... etc. The real trick is finding a mech or two that you really like playing regardless of skills. My point is, I wouldnt focus on grinding cbills and xp for skills so much as getting a decent stable of mechs... and then just experiment with weapon loadouts, and when you find something you like then commit to grinding skills.
As far as directly addressing your question about the overheating issue, yeah its probably here to stay, at least for a while, but try swapping out a laser for an extra heatsink or swap an omnipod and try some new weapons.... there are plenty more now.

Clans mechs are hot because of the massive firepower they can run. My guess is you're running 6 er mediums.
Normally this would be a loadout on a medium mech. They would put in lots of heat sinks and other stuff to keep it cool. Down side is they're slower and bigger. Its a give or take.
This patch did increase the heat a little on the clan er mediums but at the same time they increased your max range. It now works out to 800m.
So you need to look at changing your build if you dont like playing like this. Personally i like big alphas with longer cool downs. This is fine with me.
Few things in the skill tree, did you get all the coolruns? These are very important for heat. Others would be the heatgen skills on the firepower tree.

Are you sure enemy didnt use flamers on you. As the small changes in energy weapon heat should not make much difference.
