The amount of clan laser weapons has almost doubled, now we can decide for which specific situation (that we expect on the battlefield) we want to take which weapon.

Q: Which range do you want to play?
A: Continue with [short],[medium] or [long]

[short]
Q: What's your stance towards tonnage and hardpoints?
  • I have lots of them -> Take Small Pulse Laser or ER Small Laser
  • Too much hardpoints for not enough tonnage, what now?
Q: It depends. More burst damage or more heat efficiency?
  • I like long walks on tourmaline desert slowly chipping away someones armour while firing nonstop -> Take a Micro Pulse Laser and a shrink
  • Speed is my armour...and the element of surprise -> Take Heavy Small Laser or ER Small Laser
Q: I can't decide whether I should take the Heavy Small or the ER Small Laser!
A: That's not a question!

Q: When should I take the Heavy, when the ER Small Laser?
A: Surprisingly the Heavy Small laser will help you do more pinpoint damage, as it has a shorter range and more damage per duration. It is hotter but has more damage, you might want to poke more with it, if you are comfortable with the short range it does provide.
If you have 6 hardpoints you might be better off with the ER Small, has it has a higher ghost heat threshold

Q: WAIT, where's the ER Micro Laser in all of this?
A: As long as it has ghost heat (starting with the 9th laser) there's no place for this weapon. If you REALLY are tonnage starved and/or need the range badly, then by all means take it instead of the Micro Pulse Laser.

[medium]
It really boils down whether or not you have more tonnage or more slots. Take the Heavy Medium if you are tonnage starved, else take the Medium Pulse Laser. Note that you cannot really boat the Heavy Medium (ghost heat kicking in beyond 4 of them), nullifying the tonnage advantage.

[long]
Q: What's your stance towards tonnage and slots?
  • I laugh at both! -> Take the Large Pulse Laser
  • I'm short at slots but have the tonnage -> Take ER Large Laser
  • I'm kind of watching my weight but have lots of space -> Take Heavy Large Laser
  • My mech is already packed with engine and actuators -> Take ER Medium Laser
If you want to look up detailed information please refer to Kanajashi's Spreadsheet: https://docs.google....dit?usp=sharing

Ghost heat information can be looked up at Smurfys: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...eapon_heatscale

The new Heavy Facetank lazors are hot and facetank. Not sure how much quirks+Tree will mitigate.

Im not sure yet on the micro lazors. Novelty or niche?

ERLL seems decent now if you get the duration down to 1.1sec-ish.

C-MPL > ERML. That burn time is stupid

SPL is gimped, ERSl seems to have too long a burn time.

Why all the facetank?

Regarding facetank (meaning we are brawling) there are basically only two really important values: DPS and damage per duration. For the small lasers that means...
Damage/Duration: C-SML PULSE LASER > C-MICRO PULSE LASER > C-ER SML LASER ~= HEAVY SML LASER > C-ER MICRO LASER
DPS: C-SML PULSE LASER > C-ER SML LASER > HEAVY SML LASER > C-MICRO PULSE LASER > C-ER MICRO LASER

But that's not how to play a light mech. You just don't want to facetank. You want to shoot somebody and be gone before they turn to you. This also means you want to do maximum damage in an alpha, then be gone. Heat obviously is not THAT important , as you have time to cool down, DPS is neither. We want a high Damage value, there we got:
HEAVY SML LASER > C-ER SML LASER > C-SML PULSE LASER > C-MICRO PULSE LASER > C-ER MICRO LASER

If you have a good amount of hardpoints you might take 8 Micro Pulses over 5 Heavy Smalls + a heatsink...but then again you could aswell take 6 ER Smalls + a heatsink which are hotter and have a worse Damage/Duration but have a way better range.

[opinion]
Small Pulses are still the go-to weapon, if you have the tonnage. Then ER Smalls, then - if you have the hardpoints - Micro Pulses.

More than two/thirds of the Clan mechs work best if you funnel the armor forward, leaving little to no armor for the rears. This allows them to survive facetanking for insane amounts of time, and yet very weak on the backside if you try to capitalize on this.

Combine with: "Zellbriggen" aka "Dual me, Trucker!" and "IS needs to work together" while Clans are "all about their personal glory".

And you have PGI trying (terribly) to artificially foster:

IS, fast damage delivery, pop-and-squat tactics.
Clans, significantly higher damage...delivered over time, aggressive "I'm gonna rush you camping Inner Sphere surats!" tactics.

If your Clan Star Adder, Heavy Lasers are the answer every time no matter the situation.
