It says it gathers target info 25% faster and increases sensor range by 25%. I don't really need to see enemy Mechs beyond 1000 meters illuminated so sensor range doesn't really do much for me and gathering target info 25% faster is not something I need either.
Are there any unspecified advantages to using it?
Will I see more targets illuminated inside of 1000 meters if I use it?

Base sensor range is 800 meters.
(This reminds me I need to fix something in another thread.)
It provides a hard counter to enemy ECM that is NOT actively using Stealth Armor, allowing you to lock onto them and get their information at normal rate (as opposed to the penalized "25%" longer. It also removes the 25% lock delay that would still be in play against soft ECM counters

I have one ton and one slot open for either an Active Probe or Laser AMS which would you choose?

totaly depends on the Mech
is the Mech running too hot? if so do not take LAMS
are you having a lot of trouble with missiles? if so take LAMS
do you have lock on weapons? if so AP is probably better because it stops a single ECM from disabling/reducing the effectiveness of those weapons

Do you have lock on missiles?
If yes, Active Probe.
If no, then no.
Do you have a cool running build?
If yes, Laser AMS.
If no, do NOT bring Laser AMS...
