We've all seen the worst builds imaginable. The undertonned dropdecks. The complete lack of communication, situational awareness, or ability to aim weapons. The multiple LRM-only assaults.

So.

In the hopes that there's newbie FP pugs who creep these forums, what things make you happy about the pugs you get dropped with (the kinds of things that make you throw a friend request after the drop and invite them to your internal VOIP)?

My top 4:

1.) Thought about their dropdeck when they put it together, and it's appropriate for the map and their abilities.
ex: Brought longer-range mechs to Polar/Alpine, brought effective close-mid range mechs to HPG. Left the LRMs at home on River City, HPG, etc. Maybe just left the LRMs at home, period.

2.) Accuracy. Can, at the very least, hold a laser beam on their target 'mech. Ideally, can hold a laser or hit with projectiles the component they're trying to hit.

3.) Positioning. Sticks with the group, or chooses a position to effectively support the group. Doesn't throw cLRMs into the backs of teammates. At the very least, doesn't try to leeroy jenkins or sit 600m to the rear of the group with medium lasers/LRMs.

4.) Communication. Utilizes in-game VOIP - even if they're not talking, they're listening and acknowledging (command wheel). Presses R (kind of goes with #2).

The ones that don't just insta-die and actually tank damage so i can farm dmg off the other team. Those are great.

I like the ones willing to group up, follow calls and most of all, brawl all day, every day.

Legacy of old game version called "pick up group". Derived from this:

The ones who actually follow orders, push with their team, and don't slap LRMs on an Assault mech and sit in the back!

People that play in PickUpGroups are called pugs from people that play PickUpGroups but also sometimes play Groupplay to show that they are better then the other pugs.

Its like: We sit both behind a tree and ****, but sometimes ago i used a toilet, so i am better then you.

More fun?
These people only call others pugs,
but dont understand that they are also pugs in the moment they play in pick up groups.

People like to look down at others,
thats why all that tv-trash works:
"There is all ways someone who is dumber, fatter or uglier than you",
and that makes you feel better.

The perfect PUG is the one that listens to what they are being told and follows. That player is not totally reckless and is willing to do what it takes to succeed.

Too bad such players are rare and most of the time they are in organized units.

Told from whom?
A group leading and calling? Ok, if they dont use pugs as meatshilds to pad their stats
Some ramdom guy yelling and screaming in coms? Never
A "pug" trying to call and lead? Sure, his bravery should be rewarded

Anyone who doesn't belly ache like a 15 year old school girl whose parents took away her cell phone is okay with me. Beta male social justice warrior pansies who complain about balance while not willing to put the work in running ****** builds and refusing to learn from people who have. If your not willing to put the time and effort in don't ***** about those who have.

Play with the team, follow the calls, put some effort in.

I'm even flexible on mediocre/bad builds and bad aim. I don't play expecting pugs to carry the team.

However if they don't Rambo, stick with the team and follow the calls I'm happy.

Someone who works with the team, communicates (Even if it is only text chat), and has some game sense is good. Aim also helps, but positioning is more important. Hey, thats what streaks are for ;)
Had a game of scouting as IS where our 1 PUG brought a LRM kintaro to river city protect. He was following calls and working with the group, so we planned around him and baited the fight into the river at 500 meters from our LRM guy, taking 3 griffins with LRM support vs 4 Novas. Barely won that, but we won.
Would I have preffered another griffin built for brawl? Yes, but the fact that everyone worked together made up for it. He got almost 700 damage with the LRMs, so he did his fire support job well.
It was his first game of scouting, so he didn't know that LRMs in scouting was a bad idea.

dont confuse pug with potato. they are completely different. some players are both, and they can kindly take their booty to quick play until they get gud.

pretty much if a pug can aim and has good situational awareness and can do at least 1000 damage, he wont be dead weight and might actually prove useful. also i dont want players who just want to qualify in an event or pad their kill stats, i want players who want to win. even if you play for score/cbills/rp/lp, you get more if you win. i also hate players who bring nothing but support mechs.

also i find comms overrated. ive seen groups of random skittles trounce coordinated units from time to time on skill alone. when people say you should use comms, what they are really saying is they want somone to tell them what to do because they havent a clue. all they know is how to shoot robbits. unfortunately leadership is a rare trait and most of the big units have scooped them all up. not to say coordination isnt nice to have. simply calling targets gets you a small advantage, but you can use the r key or target spotted to draw attention to a priority target or a mech about to die. if its easier to spit into a mic than to use the command wheel then do so, its all about preference. real tactical genius is very rare.
