Hi All,
I am a returning player that is getting back into the game. I purchased a TBR-C last night. From my understanding this is a solid mech. It's not the best but it is good enough to be competitive and it is very versatile. Is that an accurate assessment? Back when I played you seemed to have to purchase 2 more of the same kind of mech in order to unlock certain abilities/skills. With the new skill tree is that still the case? Any advice on setups and general tips would be welcome. I plan to use it as a laser boat.

Yes. It is, there are stronger choices, but TBR is still a strong mech. Its versatility is top.

No, one mech one set of skills. No need to skill three variants to master a single one.

Read some great guids here for more information. As for setups, laser vomit is an easy and strong start.
Plan your skills here:

Build your mech here:
Naked TBR
Laser vomit TBR example:
TBR-A (A is like C)
Beware. The left ST is often focused.

I generally dont like to run 100% pure energy on my timbers since it requires that bloody left torso that gives you lots of neg quirks (the thing is already slow and non-agile enough without them) which gets focused like crazy in my experience. If you really want to do laser vomit then your best bet will be 2 LPLs with 5-6 ERMLs and all else into HS since the mech doesnt have the slots to do lighter weapons without running it below max tonnage (same issue with EBJ).
That said, the 1 thing ive really had alot of luck with is 1 ballistic (gauss or uac, ur call) and then supplemented by either 6 ERMLs or 1 HLL and 5 ERMLs (you dont need that damn LT either so you get maximum agility). The gauss build specifically really wrecks people, 15 ppfld with very good range and valocity, and thats supported by 42 or 53 laser alfa, and while that doesnt sound super powerful, your gauss is heat free, and you can fire that alfa 2-3 times before heat becomes a concern. Thing is, if i could dump ferro and have a few more heatsinks, you could run 2 HLL with 6 ERML and have enough heatsinks to cool that really well, but sofar that isnt the case, and i think the gauss+1HLL+5ERML (or 6 ERML if you want more sustain and less alfa) is the way to go on that mech. There are better options for pure laser boats (EBJ, HBR, mediums, ecm).

My advice is forget about the timby is pretty bad right now man, Ebon Jag can do everything timber does but better, but still if you want to make good use of the timby you can make A: 4SRM6+lasers or B:2 LPl 4 Meds or even 5 Meds, you can also do Gauss vomit but since you are returning i suggest just using full laser vomit until you feel your aim is good enough.
