The inventory in the game client does not behave like an inventory according to the common definition of an inventory being a "complete list of items such as property, goods in stock, or the contents of a building".

Use case: I know I've bought some light fusion engines, but I can't remember which ones, so I go to my inventory to see if I really do own a LF275 or whether I just imagined buying it. It's not there... I do own one, it's just equipped on my Hunchback 4P, so it's not on my supposed complete list of items that I own.
Is the inventory a complete list of things in my Battlemech hanger after I've driven all the Battlemechs out or something?
The inventory is not useful if it doesn't show me a list of things that I own.

The inventory lists everything in your hangar. Once a component is inside a mech, it becomes a part of the mech, and is listed as a part of the value of the mech chassis itself instead of being listed separately. This is a logical, and typical inventory system. You're just used to stuff like Skyrim where it has an 'equipped' tag on a list of everything on your character, but not including everything owned or in chests, etc. (think of your mech as a chest, and you are also carrying the chest with you, you still have to open the chest to see what's in it, but you know the value of the chest and everything in it)
