Well, multipurpose is a misnomer and it's actually about which BattleMech can take the largest variation of "viable" (depending on you interpretation) loadouts.

Also, no OmniMechs obviously because they are the definition of flexibility. It's a shame that we don't have continuous campaign where we can only pilot a single 'Mech which can be retrofitted.

BTW, it's the Warhammer WHM-6R for me because it has the combo of having:
  • the tonnage
  • good hardpoint combo and location
  • decent speed
  • also the (L)AMS slot sits at the CT so you sacrifice little if you want to carry it (it would be wonderful if the 6R had 2E CT)
The WHM-6R can carry:
  • 2Gauss + 4ERML, or even more lasers if you wanna sits in an XL deathtrap.
  • 2UAC + 2PPC
  • 1AC/20+ 2SPPC (+ Missile)
  • 2(U)AC/10 + medium lasers
  • 2HPPC + medium lasers + machine guns if you wanna roleplay
  • 2RAC/5 + medium lasers
  • 1HGauss+ medium lasers
Basically almost any combo of ballistic and energy weapons. Sure that the King Crab, for example, has similar flexibility but its status as an Assault and the low, wide profile makes it somewhat more limited.

Marauder 5D. Excelent profile for any engagement, high mount supports Heavy PPC nicely for direct fire at long range, LRM 15+Artemis x2 is reasonable damage for indirect fire, and then four medium pulse lasers are usually 'all you need' in close quarters if you play with proper awareness. Even has a mount for AMS if you're so inclined.

Cicada.

I like the Rougneck idea though may give it a try. I really had hopes for the Phoenix Hawk but it needs some of the Inner Sphere tech I heard about that wasn't added yet.

Ok leaving out anything Clan including Clan Battlemechs and working under the assumption I could only chose one IS Battlemech and one IS Battlemech only in a Campaign where I can only play that one battlemech. (I know I changed the rules a tad, sorry).

PHX-2, hands down.

Fast, agile, great jumping capability, above average durability and ECM combined with fairly decent firepower. If I had to choose, one mech and one mech only it would without a doubt be this mech.

Centurion - now if R&R came back Mediums would have a right to exist...

Catapults by far since closed beta even though I'm more of a crazy brave light pilot now. I always seem to go back to them, in particularly two of them.

K2. Armor and mobility on it are great plus you can dual ac 20/guass if you want. I don't because of super mega melt and die gh with the 20s. I do like swapping mixed builds of ballistics and lasers on it. I have affectionately named mine Battlecat with camo and colors of He-Man's Battlecat.

C1. It does for missiles and lasers combos that the k2 can't. Since I don't have C-BB I can't compare the two. These two mechs are always vying for my top spot in heavies. I've ran others but the cats seem to out do the rest that I have in every way.

Right now? Maybe the EBJ.

- take laservomit and play the midrange trade game
- take laservomit and brawl rush an ERLL team
- take laservomit and receive a brawl rush by backing up and spreading out
- take laservomit to a straight up brawl and enjoy zapping the legs off any mech in less than two volleys
- take laservomit
- ...
- PROFIT.

I have to admit, my Jester is way up high on the top of my all time favorite list. I run 2 x LPL, 4 x ER ML, 2 x JJ and a 300 standard on mine which gives great durability, fast speed (80 kph run speed with tweak), Jump Jets and it also has very consistent firepower. It would rank right behind my PHX-2. If Hero meches are taken off the table, then as you mention the K2 is also very good.

Then right below my Jester would be the Warhammers and Marauders in no particular order of preference.

This was also my pick but the MAL-1P being big and slow (325 max engine rating), creates some limitations on what it can do.

What do you mean it's an incredibly niche mech and doesn't really fit the "multipurpose" part? SHUT UP!

I agree with the WHM-6R choice, though to offer some alternatives...

RFL-3N or JM6-FB for similar options on a lighter chassis with higher arm mounts
ZEU-5S for energy/ballistic mix with the added SRM/MRM/LRM doomfist
WHM-BW, RFL-LK, JM6-S or ZEU-9S2 if you prefer ballistics over energy

Why not ARC-5W?

No, really. LRM, SRM, MRM, RL. Covers all your bases, and even has a nice little panic button :D

Just kidding.

The SCR/TBR/WHK are very multi-purpose.

IS mechs - agree with the WHM 6R. The Mauler can also serve multiple roles.

I'm partial to the 1b myself, I prefer the ST E mount. Does work in all environments, one of my favs.

Wolverine. 6R and the 7K. The 7D is also pretty good. Quarantine's pretty decent but the full right side setup is a problem.

Stalker is a super close second, followed by every other 85 tonner.
