Absolutely not on the resource intensive part.

There are mech games that run on your freaking smartphone with inverse kinematics.

It's a smartphone game, so... Can you actually target individual components?

Remember, the problem with IK is not to get the visuals right. It's to get the visuals and the hit registration consistent.

Not this particular one, since it also meant for sheer speed, and many of the hits have a collateral or splash effect. In other words, you don't need to target individual components.

This smartphone and tablet game however, does have segmented hitboxes with inverse kinematics, bipedal and six legged mechs. Note the numbers on the components which are actually healthpoints for that particular component.

Two years ago...hell even a year ago...custom geometry would have been super exciting for me. Hell, I have proposed it to PGI often enough as an obvious way to make some easy money off those of us who are more interested in making our mechs look unique than necessarily good or effective. But now? Now I just don't care anymore (besides from the sound of it this will not effect weapons so an arm Large Laser on a Thunderbolt will still look like it does now...that is to say small and sad...so who cares?).

Alas, the irony of now, finally providing a mechanism to make a mech look unique when PGI is seemingly more concerned than ever to make every mech equally mediocre is not lost on me. Now that no mechs feel particularly special, all mechs will have the ability to look special, even if they are not. Perhaps the next meta will involve points for striking a pose.

Are we really likely to see custom geometry with the proposed bolt-on system when Inverse Kinematics are, at the very least, infeasible and resource intensive?

Well, there's a big technical difference.

PGI can't sell feet that align correctly to the terrain. But they can sell Bolt-Ons.

So Bolt-Ons are 'feasible', but IK is not.

Custom geometry --- sounds familiar. That's pretty much something done by a lot, if not all, mech games that isn't Mechwarrior. That's because mech game designs tend to be modular, but Mechwarrior inherits that three decades old concepts from Japanese mecha designs having weapons mechanically built into the bodies, other than missile packs on the shoulders and the guns they carry on their arms.

Custom Geometry?
Can I have my Centurion back?
Can I have a "Real" Sunglow Type 2 for my Thunderbolt - the PPC is a bandaid but still not enough

I should add that the smartphone games I depicted above are using Unity and Unreal Engines. So the fundamentals are the same as PC and mobile, the difference on the platforms are more on the size of the textures, polygon counts, size of the maps and the number of combatants in one arena, so in other words, the mechanics are shared, the differences lies more in scale.

If PGI wants to make money, fast, why not sell tokens to convert standard mechs into hero variants either with $$$ or MC? I'd gladly pay for a 30% C-Bill boost on some of my favorite mechs. Assuming I were to give PGI money, of course.

Yeah something like War Thunder does.

War Thunder also sells all sorts of bushes and twigs that can be used to bolt on to a tank as a camouflage, so you can make your sniping tank look like a box of twigs with tracks.
