You know, i see this all the time. People say they want to increase the player pop, or say the player base is dropping, or there is not enough advertising ect..
Ive been watching steam numbers for a while now and right now for example, there are around 1750 people playing on steam alone.. If what they say is about right, that MWO client has at least as many if not more, that is 3-4k players at prime time.
Now, i also watch steam top 100's, and you know what.. games that have peaks around 3-4k, and dips to about 2-2.5k make the top 100 all the time.
What do many players think of as good games? If you said steam top 100 then you would be right. I know i often check that to see what games people are playing, and often put them on my radar to try. There are millions of players out there, If they saw this game popping up all the time, or on weekend i'd have to think more players wouldn't be so worried about player pops, and maybe it would bring in more folks.
Steam is super easy to use, and it's free, and does not slow down the performance at all. So why not get more people using that platform. Communities, and word of mouth often are what makes games grow. Why not try to be part of the solution?

Steam is quite unpopular with a large part of the european players due to its adhesion contract like behavior on many games that extends even on singleplayer games.
Also unwanted updates, problems with once easy to mod singleplayers and their advertising and data collection behavior where/are seen as problematic within a large part of gamers community.
Since this behavior has been coppied by many other companys like EA and their subs, Perfect World and Activision Blizzard the viability of this concerns is now to be questioned but steam as one of the early multy games provider platforms has a certain bottom of the barrel reputation and is often avoided if possible by many players.
In fact forcing steam on players could be a large reason to drop MWO for many people.
