I just realized something, i was looking at Sarna and saw a hand-held RAC2 for the Atlas III, and as you can see it's actually pretty large.

PGI probably would never allow mixed-tech. But considering that artwork, RAC2 actually looks like it's supposed to be pretty big. Compare that to the thin gun we have today.

I propose the RAC2 barrel cluster to have the same diameter as that of the RAC5.

The battlemech pictures were drawn to be cool looking. Don't take their scale so literally.

The size is right. RAC2 has 6 times the DPS of the AC2 in lore, in MWO it's only 2.1 times the DPS. Shrink the gun in your image by 2/3 and it's about right.

Still would be as big as an RAC5 that we have today if we accept that the Atlas III would have been the same height as the Atlas.

Not quite; even without accounting for jams, RACs only hit with about 4 shells on average when they fire a 6 shot burst, so it is more like 4 times.

... wait why do you have such a hit rate?

And also why would we take in hit-rate in account?

Eh. RAC5 on my Urbie is bout the size the RAC2 should be... and the RAC5 should be 5-10% bigger. RAC5 is 33% of the Urbies mass, RAC2 over 25%. The RAC2 is ludicrously small on it.

Though it does visually represent it's actual effectiveness well.

They have such a hit rate because they are a 'cluster' type weapon in TT that uses the cluster hit tables. Even Ultra Autocannons are the same, although they use the 2 hit table with only about 40% probability of hitting with both shells (which means a UAC20 only does about 28 damage on average).

And yeah, hit rate doesn't matter for size. It does matter for 'DPS' though.

Hmm, maybe we should have designated "nominal" and "effective" dps.

Which is why they need to make common artwork for all weapons, and not making the art different on a mech by mech basis. Have you guys seen what a Gauss rifle looks like in the arm of a Battlemaster 1G? My god it loos silly. Then equip an AC/2, that thing looks larger than the gauss Posted Image. PGI, you so silly.

Edit; Or am I thinking of the Thunderbolt 9S? I can't remember and can't get on right now. Anyway, still silly looking.

Probably the Thunderbolt. The GR is still bigger than the AC2 on it, but it does look weirdly small.

I've been saying this since at least the Firestarter where the AC barrels looked like MGs and the PPCs like MLs. I still have a thread somewhere in the ether about it...

mind you all the image links are busted due to Photobucket being idiots.

Then its definitely the Battlemaster. I distinctly remember laughing for 10 minutes straight when I was looking at a GR that was half the size of an AC/2.

No. The entire AC/2 on the Battlemaster can fit into the GRs barrel. It's WAY bigger.

Try the Highlander. Gauss rifles and ultra-5s look ridonkulous in that arm.

The GR looks a bit stubby, but its still huge compared to the AC/2.

I think it's the Thunderbolt you're all thinking about.

Yah, was able to fire it up for a few minutes for examples. It was the T-bolt I was thinking of, but I do remember the AC/2 on it being a lot longer (or was it the 5?). However, I also took a lot of screenshots of mechs with a GR and an AC/2 in the same component for comparisons.
Beware, 10 fullscreen screenshots bellow. To lazy to edit Posted Image
Spoiler

Few things noticeable;
1) Sizes are definitely not consistent from mech to mech, even with the AC/2.
2) From the looks of it, there are several different artworks for the gauss. Some being wide-bore and stubby, while others have a small bore and are longer.
3) The Blackjack hero actually has a larger AC/2 than the GR. I know the angles seems odd in the screenshot (because the gauss gets colored with the mech, which is interesting), but go to the store, view in mechlab, then look at it.
4) The AC/2 on some mechs is larger than the GR on other mechs (I even checked, and its even bigger on some mechs than an AC/10 and 20 is on others).
