Think about a player rating system that is not actually a glorified XP bar. Maybe if the rating would not only incorporate player success, but also success in the chosen mech, the poor poor matchmaker would have a chance of putting together halfway decent pairings in QP.

If the rating system was literally perfect, it still wouldn't substantially improve matches.

There just aren't enough players at a particular skill level queued at exactly the same time. It's a population issue, and improving the rating system won't change that.

I'd love a more accurate rating system, don't get me wrong. But it doesn't really matter when populations can't support that degree of granularity.

Oh, yes it would.

Status quo: Tier 1 players are grouped into 24, then sorted into roughly equal weight groups. Match commences.
Problem: My (or yours, not being direspectful, anyones) Tier 1 status does count as much as the Tier 1 status of members of MWO World championship finals, which they really should not.

Now, if there's only one player on this level, that's fine, nothing MM could do. But if there's one proton and one lizzeee and both are on one team and there's one you (again, not being disrepectful) and one me on the other to match that, stomps will ensue.

Also, if there'd be a reasonable skill rating that's also taking the equipped mech's BV into account, you could balance one Proton maybe with 3 of what now are T1 players, when the player population dictates that those four are the only "higher" level players and the rest would be grouped into T2 or 3 in the current system.

Only going by T1 does not allow that.
