In my own case, I'm running on Win7 64-bit, and lucky that I still happen to be. However, the 64-bit TeamSpeak and the 64-bit MWO tend to collide with each other in terms of audio balance, so I tend to use the 32-bit MWO in order to work around this, because those two don't interact in such a manner. But, if I'm using the 32-bit MWO for long enough, and playing in Faction Warfare mode, I have an occasional risk of crashing when I finally go to exit the 32-bit MWO. This annoys me, because it means that PGI isn't checking their code somewhere along the way.

I had MWO crash for a short period of time and it was due to a Windows 10 version update. Confirmed it when I rolled it back, (no crashes on exist), reinstalled it (crash on exit) then the next version update (no crashes on exist). This was after running through GPU updates/rollbacks, etc.

Unless the user is running 32 OS or is manually logging into 32bit via player made shortcut then the game defaults to 64bit. Likely more people running dx9c than there are running 32bit version of the game.

Just saying that 32 or 64 bit ain't the only variable.

I read online that AMD+Avast caused the crash for a number of people but after uninstalling Avast and restarting my system, I got the same results. Anyone else have this issue?

Yup. I get a crash very similar to this regularly on one account, but not on my other account.
