The mode should be:

One player on VIP Escort team becomes 'the VIP mech'. It's his goal to get into the enemy base alive.

The VIP Kill team should actually be defending their base from the VIP mech coming into it.

Giving the VIP the ability to declare it's intent with verbal cues (once it selects it's path) to the defending team could help a lot.

"I'm heading to D6."

"Moving to H10."

"Crossing into I4.".

This would give the defenders practical/rudimentary info about how to fan out and plan a proper defense as the match progresses. It also has the benefit of psychologically directing the gamemode for the teams when noone else is dropcalling by simply giving that info to the entire team. It provides an on going directive (defend here) for the escorting team in the context of achieving the larger objective (delivering the VIP).

And adding torso twist is a must.

Here's the thing: VIP is actually a 4y/o...

But yes, I think it would be so much better if VIP took a moment, ran a RNG, and projected his intended route. Just set like "X" number of paths or even endpoints, and VIP has to either take pre-determined paths, or has to travel through a certain number of endpoints before EZ. Then, when he sets his path, Defenders can push ahead along said path to make sure it is clear. Or lights can even try to squirrel op4 away from the path.

I often have trouble identifying who the VIP even is. By being an Atlas he is rather indistinct from virtually everyone else. The VIP indicator is only visible if directly staring at him, there isn't really an indication telling me "the VIP is WAY OVER THERE" or how to even find him as a defender.

Now, if the VIP were say an Ambassador, a truly unique and reasonably quick mech with no weapons... then we'd be talking. Can't mistake that mech as anything else. Though my preference would be a tank. The Behemoth seems fitting. The armor variant sports 4 LRM-5s on the tank and 2 AC/10s on the turret, and more armor than any 100 ton mech can actually carry. It also goes about as fast as MWO's VIP does. And at least it can also defend itself without having to actually "fight."
