Imagine each map has 100 possible drop locations scattered across the whole map. Each mech starts at one of those. You may begin nearest a teammate, or you may begin near an enemy. Who knows? The match starts and you must quickly figure out who is near you and either begin peddling to a team mate or hunkering down against a 1 v 2 and hoping to get reinforced.

This mode was very popular in the battletech MUX format that I played in the 90s. Almost as fun as random drop free for all.

Sounds interesting, but I can already hear the assault mech tears flowing, each time a dire wale is dropped next to an enemy locust. Perhaps some rules could be added to avoid the extreme cases like that.

Agreed. A "scatter drop" would be interesting. Some math should be used so that the nearest enemy mech is no closer than the median distance to your teammates, but you could still be scattered all to hell.
