Is there any one variant/loadout better than the others? I have a feeling one Cougar in my hangar will be plenty.

And jumpjets.
But lower armmounts, slower, easier to hit sidetorsi and not as many quirks.
So it will be some boring laservom with ecm and jumpjets and maybe a dualerppc sniper that uses the high energyhardpoints.

I like the Adder, you have to be careful but it has some nice build options. The Cougar as well, lot of loadouts are possible

You have to look at it like this. You have near heavy mech levels of firepower on a very low profile, very small chassis that is protected by ECM. They also aren't that common on the battlefield. What this means is that most people don't even notice you but even if they do, they don't really see you as a threat so don't often fire at you all that much if they are other targets around. This gives you carte blanch to just pour fire into the enemy in amounts they don't except to be coming from such a small mech without taking much return fire in return.
Word to the wise though, you can't play this like a light mech, in fact you can't even think of this as a light mech. You have to play up providing 2nd line support to the big boys because you have the speed of a Clan Heavy. No long flank attacks, no running bases in Conquest, no lone wolfing, 2nd line or even front line support all the way. You need to be under the feet of your team allowing them to be the distraction while you tear the enemy a new one.
In any case, it is a solid mech and alot of fun if played right. I recommend them.

Ya. Try applying that Clams Op mentality once the enemy sees you r in one of these. Basically a guaranteed kill. I like my Cougars, and have strings of success with them but woo-hoo are they fragile. Majorly skewed, due to the whole btech armor or speed or firepower trifecta. Can't wait for the fresh meat.
You can dish it out for 35 tons, but can't take it. Or get away. This mech is all about positioning

Which is why I said you have to play close support with it, right in the mix of combat under the feet of your team. You use ECM, your size and your limited perceived threat value to kill the enemy. You can't play it like a light, As far as it durability is feels more durable than your typical 35 tonner but yeah you can't sit there and trade with heavier mechs and hope to win.

(However, make no mistake: it was chosen by PGI due to people putting MW:4 on a pedestal. Lore and performance were not the driving forces. There would have been better choices).

It can be good and do work, but it just can't get any attention or it folds. Even with the added ECM and JJpods it can carry about the equal tonnage of the adder. scrap the jjs and keep the ECM and it has 17.5 tons of effective space to work with.
Mixed bag of hardpoint locations. Can mount gauss or UAC20 in the arm,the hero's side torso 1B side torsos (which can mount up to LBX10/UAC10 in one or 2xUAC5) are very high. Arm mounts are knuckle draggers tho.
the E has has equally high 1E in each side torso
It fairly comfortably can run 4 ERMed/1 HLL or C-Large pulse
Ridiculously hot but can get up to a 71 point alpha (mixing pods) (2HLL, 6 ERMED). That will also probably core you out pretty close lol. Or any mix of what is the current Clan go-to weapon set I guess. Maybe 6 ER Med/1HLL (60pt) and DHS? 7 med-pulse crit seeker?

I like the five pulse or four srm six with artie and ecm....
The mech however is one that you drive for love. Really tough having such little armour and going 87kph.
