Thur. Dec 22, 3048: Gienah CV is still being decried for loss of jobs almost a decade after it converted its Packrat ICE-production line to fusion.

Gienah Combat Vehicles is the military branch of the Lyran Commonwealth's largest civilian vehicle manufacturer, Gienah Automotive. It is a licensed manufacturer of the Packrat. Founded immediately prior to the Second Succession War, Gienah Automotive has been producing quality trucks, cars, industrial, commercial, and military vehicles ever since, despite being found on the often-turbulent Free Worlds League/Lyran Commonwealth border. Many of the products produced on Gienah are sold to the FWL. Since the residents of Gienah and the employees of Gienah Combat Vehicles and Gienah Automotive are so eager to trade with the poorer worlds of the Free Worlds League, the company's factories have never been destroyed by either FWLM or LCAF forces.

Robertson Technologies designed the Packrat Long-Range Patrol Vehicle as a mobile scout that could travel with little or no support, cross through enemy lines, and wreak havoc with rear communications and supplies. Although it was originally powered by fusion reactors to provide unlimited movement, internal combustion engines were later installed so that the fusion reactors could be used elsewhere. The Packrat is not heavily armed, nor does it have to be. It carries troops into enemy areas, where they can sabotage or report on enemy positions and movements. Much like the desert groups of Earth's Second World War, these men would operate alone, without support, and sometimes for months on end.

Do they mean powering the production line or is the lore and the news flash at odds with each other?

Nah this is about the return of the fusion engine following the Fourth Succession War. Once the Helm Memory Core got out the knowledge of how to make fusion engines was restored and they became a lot less scarce -- a lot of vehicles had been stripped of their fusion engines in the preceding centuries so those engines could be used in 'Mechs.

Exactly. Prior to the GRL GDL (damn keys) releasing the Helm Core it was all about cannibalism; whatever it took to make your mech run, including stealing grandmas fusion engine out of her Buick LeSabre. Now, that is changing as people re-discover lostech

Freudian slip there, Mr. Grimm? ;) Don't you mean GDL? hehe <_< Honest mistake, the R is so close to the D on the keyboard, and you're used to typing GR... right? :P

I really don't see the problem. Manufacturers adjust their products and processes to bring them inline with available and (re)emerging technologies. That's sound business practice. Better to cut jobs on the line than close a business outright due to lack of competitive advantage lost bowing to extremist libertarian agendas. The Lyrans may have some questionable military practices, but I've always found their grasp of market fundamentals sound. And to still be beating THIS drum after ten years...c'mon kids, it's time to grow up, cut your hair and get a real job.

Sounds like Gienah is a nice place to get garrison contract....no problems with either LCAF or FWL.

Lost all respect for GCV when they tried to renegotiate a contract post-delivery. Almost lost my neck bringing them some defecting scientist so they could save they precious hyphen-duphenator drive or whatever the hell Dr. Whats-his-face called it. Risked my tail to drop in behind Combine lines so they can put this guy back at his desk, and they wanted to cut 25% because his apprentice found his notebook? A deal's a deal... GCV would even have their precious fusion system without that guy, and my bringing him back. Should have charged 'em double! Oh well, water under the bridge now, huh? Guess I'll go buy a round for the unemployed GCV veterans at the pub. Cheers!
