1. Never turn down payment.
2. NEVER turn down payment.
3. Always ensure your employer actually HAS enough money sitting in his bank to pay you.
4. Whenever possible, get paid up front.
5. Aggressive negotiations are key to a mercenary’s livelihood. If the employer is thinking of hiring your fellow mercenaries instead of you, kill the competition and charge extra.
6. There is no such thing as “friendly” fire. If anyone fires at you, kill them.
7. Stay in the mindset that Plan A will always fail and have backups available.
8. Stay mobile. Only dead men don’t move.
9. Always carry a knife with you.
10. Duct tape is a lifesaver. For both your Mech AND you!
11. Ammo is a precious commodity. Don’t waste it with terrible accuracy!
12. Think of the children, it’s funnier that way.
13. If life gives you lemons, shoot out life’s kneecaps and demand better payment.
14. “Fall down seven times, get up eight” -Japanese Proverb
15. Eat a well balanced diet and stay hydrated. It’s embarrassing to die from malnourishment and dehydration.
16. NEVER take a job against someone called “The Chosen One”. This typically ends bad for mercenaries in all accounts.
17. Violence is ALWAYS the answer. Sometimes the violence is just verbal.
18. Never let yourself die for another’s cause. It’s your life, not their’s.
19. If you have to die, at least be a man about it and take down as many with you as possible, failing that, simply flip off the ******* who is killing you in a final act of defiance.
20. Failure is ALWAYS an option, so long as you were paid up front.

This is just the first 20 rules i've come up with.

21. Always know your employers plan in case they decide to clean up.
22. Mercenaries in the eyes of their employers are always expendable.
23. Always have a way of collecting payment ... one way or another.
24. Never do too good a job, as soon as there is nothing to do, your outta work ... or dead.
25. No one owns your life, no one has the right to take it from you.
26. Be aware of who you work with, you never know where their job ends.
27. Stupid is good, smart is dangerous.

If i'm paid before the fight, why should I care if I win or lose? Unless of course you offer a nice bonus if we win...

I see the in game payment working as half up front just for getting out of bed with the rest of the payment upon successful complement of the mission

28. Always, always, always, gather your own Intel, no matter how much the employer provides. It's your neck, not his.
29. Never depend on your employer for a ride. The temptation to save your fee by leaving you to rot might be too great.
30./ Whenever possible collect as much dirt as possible on your perspective boss. It can save your life, and get you a handy pay raise.

31. Good Techs are worth more than good pilots, and your own transport worth more than good Techs. Never skimp on the logistics just to bring a few more guns. (taken from a seminar lecture by Colonel Ben Myers, commander of the Reavers)

32. Since your being paid to shoot, shoot first
33. Shoot and scoot until you know the size and capabilities of your enemy
34. Always have a plan and never use the same plan twice in a row
35. Always do the unexpected even if it is risky
36. Remember the story of Ferdanand the bull and his young bull calf, never rush full speed into a battle

They do not conflict. If you never take the job, you don't have to worry about turning down the payment.

38. If ever hired to do a job for a woman who calls you "kid", take this job. You may find yourself heir to a mercenary company!

(Hands up for those who catch this reference. ^_^)
