Well I was in a rush getting off the train rushing to home buy some MC before BF sale ends and quickly wanted to add a hero to my collection and endend up with the Golden Boy. Then I found out the golden color is stuck (obvious I guess) so I was left with only 2 colors I could change. Oh well.

Then I start reading about builds (should have done that before getting it, I know) and found out it was never a favorite. Mostly because of huge CT and it being slow.

Maybe with new tech some of you now like it?

Haven't played it yet, no time for that now but I wanted to do this quick post and read some opinions tomorrow and decide if I ask for a refund, even if I got it on sale. I never did that before, OTOH I have enough Mech to play so I would just wait for next sale to get another Hero.

Research before you buy seems to be a foreign and alien concept these days.

If i had a Golden Boy i'd run it like this because i refuse to use any sort of lock-on weaponry EZ mode fire and forget shenanigans, but mostly because Snubby love goes excellent with SRMs:

I bought one for SSRM2 shenanigans before Civil War was even on the radar.

In that respect, I am satisfied.

Goldenboy is great in scouting, splat or streak with the biggest light engine you can get away with.
Go heavy on the survival tree and don't stop moving, it's weak spot is the legs / rear.

Worked great for me when I played IS was tough to deal with as a clanner.

In quick play you will want more ammo and backup lasers and can even be a half decent medium lrm boat if that's your fancy.

Its a pretty good little medium.

The Kintaros were never great mechs. They had easily singled out side torsos, so XLs made them easy kills. Without an XL they were slow, undergunned, or both.

Using some Civil War tech, there's enough rockets to savage a high end assault. http://mwo.smurfy-ne...bd134e9e79cfc22

LFE with classic LRM chain spam. http://mwo.smurfy-ne...5c6d5daf9bc5b4b

Kinda' hot, but MLs and Streaks (ERMLs are just too hot for this, went with straight MLs). http://mwo.smurfy-ne...9475351a3e33bbf

Mind you, all of the above builds use a 280LFE, so it's only a smidge faster than the stock engine. But it still saves you some weight, and gives you a bit more durability than an XL.

EDIT: MLs and straight forward splat. http://mwo.smurfy-ne...4b1b32665dbca22

This is exactly why I didn't buy any Hero in the BF sale except the Scorch which is already well known to be a great Hero and I already had enough to afford the Scorch. I bought the 32500MC pack from the BF sale, but only bought 20 mech bays which is a sure thing and held off buying any Hero mechs. I was seriously contemplating buying the Hero Roughneck and Thunderbolt, but in the end I didn't pull the trigger. I'll spend some MC on premium time, which is also a sure thing. Thanks to the CM sale, PT is right now a double-discount (30% off MC, 50% off PT using MC).

Consolation is that Xmas is coming and there will be another sale for sure.

Or get a Mech Bundle, comes with a standard, hero and champion mech, 3 mech bays, a cockpit item and 30 days PT, all at 50% off, still great savings there if you have the MC.

I bought it and almost regretted it,, then i played it.. Boy was i wrong. This thing is a fantastic little mech.

3 SRM4's (they fly nice and tight from the CT) then 3 MPL's to hit open holes and then the coupe de grace.. 2 Rocket 20's in the arm. Basically a sweet opener or a closer. Just make sure you use them earlier in the match so you can then have a sheild arm. Nothing worse than waiting to long and getting them critted out and they go used.

You will loose the left arm more often than not in tough fights which which also drops you down to 2 MPL's but a tight SRM4 strike with 2 MPL's is a nice little attack for a medium mech, especially later in the matches.

You can level a mech early in the match.. and still have plenty of DPS for later in the match. I ran the mech in both scouting matches and QP with nice results. IMO it is a highly underrated mech.

Technically not true (for any hero mech). If you buy a camo pattern, you can set whatever colors you want, but yeah you have to buy a camo pattern....

Yep.

To counter the typical hot-running clan build, I swapped the mpl's for three flamers when scouting. The downside is your teammates tend to get more damage than you by "harvesting" the mechs you shutdown.

Was able to squeeze in an LFE 290 too, which greatly increased endurance, much to the surprise of those aiming for my side torsos. More than a couple times, I was left running around with my CT SRM's as the only functional weapons. Not quite a zombie mech, but close enough to make a difference.

Normally I'd just stick with mpl's, however. Combined quirks on the mpl range are 30%. I'm pretty sure that base quirk is still valid, but I can't start the game client at the moment to verify.

Couldn’t you pile in a few mrm 10s? That’s fun as heck in a Javelin.

I was using this for scouting:

http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=93&l=b081870e61c41c860aac904be3b4a2390048584b

The ssrm4s are chained.

Well, you could always copy what I did with my KTO-18. It's not something you want to bring into scouting but it works well as a support platform in other modes. The LRMs make it a threat with indirect fire and the ERLLs are enough to keep it a threat when its ammo runs dry or a lock is unacheivable. If you've got a lock that you think is solid, chainfire those LRM5s or you will end up real hot real fast. If you've got a lock that you think might only last long enough to squeeze in one volley, fire them all at once.

Use a different pattern.
Kintaro does not have a huge CT anymore. It had one back when it first released and this was fixed.

NOW THAT IS A BIG MOTHER ******* CENTER TORSO!

But for some stupid reason the Kintaro can't live a single bad week down.

To add, this Cataphract has the LARGEST CT in the ENTIRE GAME....

But everyone says that's fine when I tried to petition for PGI to update its hitboxes.

I got all excited bc I saw a 40% velocity buff on the Kitana Cat panther hero...and pulled the trigger last minute in haste...
Then come to realize...there is a cbill version with the same quirk, but either a better cooldown or a heatgen reduction quirk...

SMH...

I still pilot my Cataphract, actually. The ECM variant that is equipped with a Light Engine, a UAC/20, and 4 ERMLs. I must say, I tend to lose side torsos before I lose CT with that 'mech. This could possibly be a result of people thinking that Catapracts are good candidates for XL check though, which they were before Civil War tech.
