They work the same way.
The best player in the best mech/variant (generally some heavy or assault) will have a much bigger significant value to the match than the same best player in a Light. Even at the highest of levels, you can only do so much and take so much damage in a Light compared a bigger mech. Considering most matches are a slugfest with the occasional cap win, the ability to take down an enemy as efficient as possible has a lot more value in grand scheme of the game (regardless of the mode you are running).

ONLY calculates the stat you are given, but ignores
mech classes. Even the previous Elo system PGI had put together used
ONE value to determine skill, completely
ignoring weight classes (IIRC)... considering noone considers an Awesome at the same level as a Deathstrike (MKII hero).
Either way, having too many factors (just like
mech classes) makes matching significantly more difficult in MWO... primarily due to
not enough of a population.
