Pretty much what the topic title says. Mediums, heavies, assaults, if I'm not always consistent with them I can usually tell where I'm messing up/what I should have done differently. I'm 100% lost with a light mech, the required playstyle seems completely counterintuitive to me. Despite numerous attempts, my results are always one of the following:

A: Try and scout ahead, get caught turning the wrong corner and die.

B: Stay bunched up with team, die slowly by peeking my head around trying to line up shots or die trying to take down light(s). Not once have I felt I contributed anywhere near what I would have in a different mech.

I'm using an arctic cheetah, hmlas/hmg right now but I've tried commando and a few trial mechs, only thing I had remote success with was an SRM boat. I literally have no idea WTF I am doing.

pls halp, only interested in clan mechs at the moment.

Here are some pointers for you:

1) Motion in key, motion is life. Keep moving. Always. When you move, you have "lagshield", and your armor magically doubles. Especially for small fast mechs like Locust, Commando, Myst Lynx..

2) Killing lights is easiest when you target legs. If you're going 1 vs 1 with lights, go for legs, and keep moving.

3) Use consumables. Lots of them. A well placed arty can be devastating. A well placed UAV can change the course of the match dramatically.

4) Never front-load armor. A well placed arty can strip you.

5) Never run away from the enemy with your back to them. Always shield with your arm.

6) Dart from cover to cover, buzz around enemies, harass them. A single locust can wreak havoc if left unchecked, and while the enemy is trying to chase you down, your friends can use the distraction to push or LRM..

7) Look for weak, exposed targets. Targets that are already stripped of armor, one leg open, or back open.. a light can devastate those. Also, big slow mechs will have big trouble with a fast agile light ravishing their back..

8) If scouting, be discrete. You don't need to rush in between the whole enemy team alone. A "target spotted" will do. If you feel confident you can survive, run up to them and pop a UAV. If you have good cover, TAG them, or NARC them. Only harass them if you feel confident there are not too many of them.

9) if you're running an Irondome Kitfox with 3 AMS and ECM, make sure you support your team.. that particular build is not meant for scouting or doing much damage... it's a shield for your team. It's favored weapon should he a NARC.

10) MG's are supper popular right now. 6+ MG's or HMGs, can decimate exposed structures, and especially generators on siege, but it's weak against structures in Incursion. Many lights can now boat MGs.. use them wisely though. Remember the above points.

Did I mention Motion is life?

Bonus round:

If you go for IS lights, (I hate myself for saying this) go for Stealth Armor.. A Stealth Pirate's Bane or Commando is right now the most annoying thing in the game. It's simply a threat you can't ignore, and is very difficult to kill, almost to the point of being OP.

Also, it's so cheesy that I would rather overheat than give these annoyances a kill.. God I hate those!

Yeah, I ditched the streaks, running 2 ERLL/ECM right now, fun stuff. And yeah reading all this advice definitely got me looking for isolated targets, flanking angles etc... putting more thought into positioning than I had before

Dual ERLL is a pretty decent learning build, the long range lets you stay away from enemies and out of sensor range with your ECM. As you get better and better you may want to look into ERML builds, you get shorter range but more damage if you bring more lasers, a pretty decent trade off, as the range is still around 400m. Glad you're having fun.
