When do I switch my ECM from Disrupt to Counter and vice versa?

Counter is explicitly there to cancel enemy ECMs (eg you're hunting a stealthed enemy). I'm not sure if it interacts with Incursion or Escort area jamming.

As far as i know you can't counter gamemode specific jams, that would be too easy.

Personally i switch to counter whenever i fight an ecm-target where i want my team to know it's position. Often that's only the last little bugger in a won match so it gets killed faster, but sometimes you can give an harasser who want's to backstab your team a really bad day by lightening him up to everyone.

But since ECM got nerfed a while ago i keep my ECM in disrupt most of the time, there are not as much good counter opportunities like they were in the old days when ECM was overpowered.

You can counter a gamemode jam by a NODE. Keep in mind some nodes are placed close enough together to jam you anyway since you cannot counter two ECMs at once. (Tested in the Wolfhound hero.)

I'm told that BAP also counters the NODE jam but I have not personally tested that one.

You cannot counter a gamemode jam by a TOWER.
Flight testing suggests that the jamming source is some sort of invisible object in the air (as you can get 'above' the jamming field). We have no ECM mechs capable of reaching it.
If it isn't an object in the air, then it is strictly a developer constructed zone that causes jamming outside of the game mechanics.
Four counter ECMs standing next to the tower and stacked on top of each other results in... no effect suggesting we're out of range or it is outside of the actual game mechanics.

If you use lock on weapons and they are being prevented by jamming, switch to counter.
If you are trying to sneak up on an enemy without the activation of Stealth Armor, you MUST switch to counter or you will give yourself away.
See video for demonstration. "Low signal" means ECM nearby.

Make sure to switch it back on as soon as you're discovered.

If there is LRM support in the area and an enemy is shrouded by ECM, you can counter the ECM to get LRM support. Keep in mind this leaves you vulnerable to the same.

Far too many lights try to sneak up on me, aren't attacking or anything in the hopes of catching me completely off guard at just the right moment... and don't seem to realize that their ECM lets me know they are there. Sometimes I deliberately ignore them to make sure I'm cold enough to fire everything at once and make a subtle attempt at turning or to get my back toward a corner or wall just to make it hard for them... Then I throw it in reverse, whip around real quick (you turn fastest at 25% or less speed) and twist at the same time followed by letting loose with everything on the nearest leg.

Broken leg, no surprise attack (from them) and now they limp pathetically while I finish the job.

So if you sneak up on someone, either turn on the stealth armor or set the ECM to counter or you will give yourself away. (OR don't get closer than 90 meters, derp).

Ok, thanks guys. So typically if I am doing fire support, I just keep it at default, ie Disrupt?

There's no point in switching to Counter unless you're dealing with an enemy ECM or node jamming in Incursion.
