Im curious as to why we are not permitted to use unit names from the Battletech universe. Did catalyst say no? is it a copyright issue?

Canon units. Originally they were to be actual NPC units in the game that players could join after meeting specific criteria but NOT actually take overall command of the unit for Community Warfare/Faction Warfare/Faction Play. But there was also the issue of units from different venues attempting to use the same name so to also prevent naming issues for players coming in created and naming my unit first, people were not allowed to use Canon unit names.

Now, they can use something that is similar but in the beginning PGI/IGP was more strict, as well as the player base posting on the recruitment threads the issues the posters were making. This was before players could create ACTUAL units in the game itself.

You can't use unit names (which I actually agree with) but you can use personality names. Makes sense...

*shrug* There are still units using canon names anyways. The Tamar Jaegers, for instance.

The canon name though is Tamar Jagers. And the name only appeared in Camo Specs, Succession Wars and Tech Readout 3026. Possibly were never mentioned in the sourcebooks due to being a combined arms unit with a few medium mechs.

Besides copyright, it definitely helped reduce any possible CS issues.
