Second, dont bring crappy builds. Faction warfare is not the place to try out experimental builds, you do that in quick play. In faction warfare you bring mechs that were designed for one purpose. A brawler, a lrm boat, a gen rusher, a trader, etc. 4 different weapon types of 4 different ranges to be good for all situations is a recipe for disaster.
Pros - you earn cbills faster, you level your mechs faster since you're doing 4 at a time vs 1 at a time in quick play. I find faction warfare more fun since its with teammates.
Cons - There are some good teams playing faction warfare and you might get rolled. It happens. Try to find a way to play with those teams or learn from those teams.
Mercenary track - you can switch factions every 7 days or even IS to Clan. You earn more cbills because of the cbill contract bonus. You dont lose your experience when switching factions.
Loyalty track - you earn more loyalty points so you can level up through the faction reputation ranks quicker. Unfortunately if you break loyalty to switch to a different faction, you have to wait 7 days before you can join the new faction, and you also lose a percentage of your earned loyalty points for that faction's reputation.
Hope this helps you decide. All in all, faction warfare is the way to go, but its not for those looking for a quick play style of fighting.

This ^, faction play can be very fun in a group of organized people, feels like an actual battle instead of a bar brawl like quick play. If you are on your own it's only 1/10 games that are fun.

It is easier to learn in a group. Plenty of groups around. Or even a unit... Although it seems a lot of loyalist units have a taste for rushing objectives of late. Both IS and Clan. Seems most Merc groups won't - They've prefer to fight, afterall this is a FPS.

And if you refuse to follow whoever is drop calling and actually making an effort.
Or if you claim to be a regular 2k+ player and fail to break 1500 in the 2 days / 5-6 games preceding said statement... Thus, invaliding your opinion.
Forevermore.

Loyalists and mercs get loyalty points that'll eventually earn ya mechbays and MC. Freelancers can just drop in. If you wanna give it a go, make a merc unit and drop both sides, IS and clan. See if you find any groups you'd like to work with and ask 'em if you can group up.
