Which Mech Pack?

I hade a break before the new tech came to MWO and have come back and am having a ball but there have been so many lovely new mechs introduced that I am struggling to pin down to 1 mech.
I own clan and IS mechs last packs I bought were the Maurader and Viper, I also enjoy piloting my Heavy Metal and Battlemaster (well since the new tech was introduced.)
Now I prefer IS mechs to Clan.
I like distinctive mechs like the look of the viper.
I love the look of the Nightstar but I have heard it pops a bit to easily.
I like the design of the roughneck (I don't particularly mind that it's not cannon)
The Fafnir doesn't really do it for me.
Not a massive fan of lights but am open to all other weight groups.
Any input would be appreciated.

I suppose you can try to roll your luck with the Fafnir pack. You can cancel it later anyway, after seeing quirks and hitboxes and whatnot.

Roughnecks are an acquired taste with the low AC arms but the pack gives a good range of loadouts (AC primary, missile primary, all energy). They are a bit low on the DPS side but as tough as nails. The hero is well worth having too.
The Rifleman pack is a good choice for the QP queue if you can handle being a little soft for a Heavy. High arms and mobile but a little samey across the range (most are AC primary, one is all energy, no missile) distinguished more through quirks than loadout.
The Warhammer pack is also well rounded and offers a couple of mechs that do very well in CW.
the Assassin and Bushwacker are also very solid mechs with the Assassin being a great QP mech while the Bushwacker does well in Scouting too.
All of those, however, you can now buy for cBills (except the hero or cBill boost mech from the Collector pack).
Unfortunately I can't recommend the Nightstar. They're very average overall and it's one of the few packs I've bought that I'm disappointed with.
I hope this helps

Quality isn't the sales of mech packs that they immediately neeed to fix or nerf.

While I understand some Mechs/equipment can dominate, I have come back from playing British tanks in Warthunder and frankly what they have done to 1 nation is disgusting, It now has a higher fantasy setting than MWO. Hench why I have come back and why I would like to add a pack to my stable that I can pop the hero variant to.
I have had less frustration on average in the last 2 weeks than the last 3 months in Warthunder.

And with current quirks urbies are better than people think they are.
P.S. I wouldn't spend $ until new roadmap.

Anni is available for C-Bills. If OP wants to spend money on already C-Bill released mechs, then I'd recommend the Warhammer pack.

I think for now I will do as you suggest and wait for the roadmap, though since I have been away for a while was wondering, are we due one soon?

He mentioned the Roughneck as one of the options he was looking at in the OP, so I assumed he didn't mind if they were out for cbills or not anyway.

Seconded. Most mechpacks have at least one severely underperforming variant, but even the most average WHM variant is still a super solid mech. The Bushwacker and Assassin are also fairly solid packs, although not as much as the WHM pack. As much as I love my Roughnecks, there's only one really good variant in the basic pack, the rest you have to go to the reinforcements and hero for. The same goes for most of the other IS packs, you'll find great mechs in the reinforcements and mostly average stuff in the basics.

I think we will get new roadmap with Solaris (spring?). Right now we are at "looking ahead" of old roadmap, waiting for Solaris and related features like lootboxes rework, bolt-on geometry, etc.
With upcoming MW5 and absence of post-solaris roadmap there is growing discontent about future of the game. I'm not really worried, but i would like to see a roadmap. Meanwhile, there is enough free content to enjoy.

If I interpret OPs question as asking what 'mech he should buy, regardless of availability, I'd say that of his stated preferences the Roughneck is a good place to start. I have only used the energy one but it has godlike hardpoints. If you like to hill hump or otherwise play edge games, it's very good. So stick to the over-the-cockpit hardpoints with high damage alpha builds and you'll be golden. Pretty cheap, too, around 6 mil c-bills. So you can farm them up fast.

A little bit of editing..
"I love the look of the Nightstar but I have heard it makes OTHER mechs pop easily and their tears have them claiming the mech is bad so that I won't use it against them to bathe in their tears. "
"I like the design of the roughneck (I don't particularly mind that it's been/being made canonical... though in tabletop the mech likes to explode due to excessive amounts of ammo)."
"The Fafnir doesn't really do it for me, because the owl eyes are supposed to be heavy gauss barrels, but PGI doesn't even realize that." (Nor could they really make that the norm, without having to explain why their pea shooter guns do so much damage and yet the giant capital-ship size barrels of the Heavy Gauss is so weak... thanks to PGI's insistence on front-loading damage on practically all weapons).
"Not a massive fan of metal coffins but am open to all other weight groups."
There.
Much better.
Get a Nightstar already.
If you like the King Crab, you'll enjoy the Nightstar.
Roughneck's alright. The monitor in the upper right side of the cockpit can be annoying, though. The whole cockpit bounces instead of the pilot when the mech walks, which makes the monitor very distracting.

To that I'd add, if they are any good at lateral thinking I'd suggest the Bushwacker, as it responds well to that kind of pilot.

Good summary right there. I like the Nightstar, a useful, if not outstanding mech, the -9P is a hoot with either four LB10-X or three AC10.
It's unfortunate if you missed the last series of sales since most of the mechs mentioned were 40% off (c-bills), with many of the mechs packs and heroes 30% off. If you are patient enough, just wait for the next sale/event. There should be one before too long.
Good hunting,
