I think that was my gateway table top drug before Battletech. I still really love that universe Steve Jackson games created. The Car Wars video game was pretty legendary in itself for back then as well. I remember setting up the paper grid boards and placing my cardboard cars on top and trying to make a 45 degree turn at a certain speed using the tool they provided....lol. We had a pretty large group of players at times and it was a great game for groups of teens in the 80s. Just curious if others had a fondness for this game as much as Battletech.

I remember it as well. i used to love loading up a semi with trailer and go biker gangbusting lol. Too bad the computer gamre never made buses or semis work. Auto Assault was supposed to be the spritual successor, but for some reason never really clicked with gamers. It was right in the middle of the FPS craze, and I think it got lost in all of that noise. Bummer though.

Cars Wars was also my starter drug. Me and my dad used to play a lot. There was a gaming store here for awhile, we had a group that play car wars, star fleet battles, advanced squad leader, and other grognard games. Gaming was great then, before Magic the gathering.

Ahh so true in regards to the "Magic Gathering" card games. Friend and I played some old Squad Leader as well before . Anyone remember a game called Twilight 2000? Can't remember if that was pre Battletech or not. Revolved around post apocalyptic Russia with US troops.

Feels that way, on some weeks my local gaming places WH40K Friday ends up Friday Night Magic. Long as there's room for both though I guess that's okay.

I don't think I did play Car Wars more than once if even that, but I knew a kid who had it and introduced me to Battletech. Carwars did look interesting though.

Yeah, I definitely remember Car Wars, good times. It's how I got started gaming in the first place. I've still got every book, box set, road atlas, Autoduel Quarterly etc. that I ever owned. I can still build a car in my head without needing to look at a single book thanks to having memorized all of the information, much like how I can do with mechs. I played it religiously till' I discovered Battletech back in 87'. After that, BT became my drug of choice and I never looked back, although Car Wars would always hold a special place in my heart.

Who could not wait for the next issue of Autoduel® Quarterly?

First page to check out - Uncle Albert's Auto Stop & Gunnery Shop.

Still have Vol 5, No.1 that has an article titled Uncle Shmalbert's Auto Shop and Gunnery Stop. "New" items (all very unofficial, of course); Nuclear Power Plant, Radiation Suit (for use with previously mentioned item), Grilled Cheese Sandwich ($5, one grenade equivalent, one box weighs 10 lbs. Area effect), Black Hole Dropper, Existential Blue Crayon Gun, Dr Deathwish's Patented Armor Remover, Photon Torpedoes, Adrenalzine, and the one really useful new item - Rule Bender (the first one fired wins the argument).

ahh, fun times indeed.
