Mechwarrior Tactics died the moment they announced it's using a booster buy system: You'd buy packs of random units with no way to know what you get.

That turned a load of people off the game.

Tactics folded well before IGP did. IGP folding just meant there was no bringing it back, thankfully.

A booster system like Heroclicks? I never played Mechwarrior Tactics.

Me neither, but the way it was described on the website:
You'd have to buy a booster containing a certain number of mechs.
When you would have opened the booster, for each contained mech, there'd have been a random roll to see which chassis/variant it is.
Some variants and chassis would have been more rare than others.
Depending on the booster, a certain amount of mechs would have been guaranteed to be of a certain rarity, e.g. one rare.

Most engagements would have been played lance on lance (4vs4).
Many people would want to play with four of their favorite chassis.
The amount of boosters needed to get four of the same mech would have been quite high.
Getting a certain variant of a rare mech would have been a really low chance.

"Here are your common Urbanmechs*, your uncommon Urbanmech* and your rare Urbanmech* Hero, would you like to buy another booster?"

So, yes, indeed a mechanic similar to the mechwarrior dark age clickytech collectible miniature game.

Compare this to the classic battletech tabletop game, where you can freely choose what miniatures you want to buy - you just need the technical readout containing the stats for the unit you want to field.

* replace Urbanmech with a mech you'd never want to play.

At least with Heroclixs I could buy single models at gamestores or on E-Bay. I spent $15 on a Cain Marko Juggernaut,

There's a fairly decent summary of the events posted on Hare Brained Schemes' forum:

(please note remarks / corrections in several subsequent posts in the thread)

Just bought the new Battletech game by Harebrained Schemes. I think it's way better than MW tactics had any hope of being.
