Replacing ghost heat, but using the same ghost heat thresholds, diminishing returns can solve boating in a much simpler manner.

In mechlab, when you exceed what is currently the ghost-heat threshold for a weapons group, it instead increases a passive percentage on your mech.

The percentage starts at 0%. This represents how much your capacitors are over-loaded.

If you were to say, equip 4 er large lasers instead of 3, this increases your capacitor by a percentage based on twice how much damage the additional systems does.

In this case, 20%, which would result in a 20% total damage reduction you do with energy weapons, adds a 20% chance for all ballistics (even non-uac) to jam when you fire, and adds a 20% chance that missiles in your volleys will either prematurely dud or misfire and lose lock/veer off.

This works in the background, does not require timing or understanding of a hidden system layer. It does not require micromanaging of multiple bars. It also allows people who still want to boat to play the odds or run potato experiments, if they so wish.

The problem of boating is the availability of hard points... you have like twice the hard points than the stock version on a lot of variant. Lot of hard points mean it's possible to boat weapons.

Augmentation of cool down when boating could be a lot better than ghost heat.

Reducing the number of hard points will be a incredible salt shower...but giving range and cooldown bonus to stock mech could be interesting ?

dont like this

it will just make people boat similar weapons instead of identical weapons

there will still be loopholes to abuse

a revised version of energy draw seems like a much better alternative to me. energy draw closes all the loopholes by making all weapons draw from the same energy pool.

I had a similar idea of damage reduction, but as Khobai says if it uses ghost heat's thresholds, which leaves so many loopholes, it'll be just as worthless.
