Reason 37 for not joining an organization: Can't be court martialed.

The city of Qum’ran, at the eastern edge of the Expanse where the desert meets the mountains, is best known for its unique contribution to Brasha’s planetary militia. The Qum’ran Guard are an elite infantry unit, mounted on tariqim -bipedal lizards native to the planet, that stand roughly six feet tall at the shoulder and whose ground-eating stride rivals the speed of some BattleMechs and hovertanks. Like the ostrich of old Terra, a tariq can run at truly amazing speed; fleshy deposits near the base of the tail serve them like a camel’s hump, storing nutrients on which their bodies can function for several days in the absence of food and even water. Tariqim are predators, feeding on smaller lizards and the large waterfowl that frequent the oases. They are also highly intelligent and readily trainable if culled from their litters in the first three months after birth.

Shouldn't they be called cavalry, not infantry?

Not in an era where Mechs are regarded as Cavalry...

More likely, they'd be regarded more as Mechanised or Mobile Infantry, I'd guess.

Negating your own premise does not lead to truth. Anyone that is cruel to an animal himself becomes one by surrendering humanity in the act. So, bullet to the head because it can no longer bear its burden or put out to a well fenced in for life pasture? What you decide determines your own humanity... or lack thereof.

If they dismount to fight then they are Mounted Infantry or Dragoons. If they do not dismount to fight then they are Cavalry.

The designation of cavalry was not usually given to any military force that used other animals, such as camels or mules. Infantry who moved on horseback, but dismounted to fight on foot, were known in the 17th and early 18th centuries as dragoons, a class of mounted infantry which later evolved into cavalry proper while retaining their historic title.

From earliest times cavalry had the advantage of improved mobility, making it an instrument which multiplied the fighting value of even the smallest forces, allowing them to outflank and avoid, to surprise and overpower, to retreat and escape a

Mechanized infantry are infantry equipped with armored personnel carriers (APCs), or infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) for transport and combat (see also mechanized force).

There are several units Baattletech units (BattleMech, Armored, Infantry) that call themselves a Cavalry Unit. These Fast recon units.

U.S. Army armoured cavalry has the mission of reconnaissance and security. Unlike armoured and infantry units, U.S. Cavalry is organized in Regiments, Squadrons, and Troops which are equivalent to Brigades, Battalions, and Companies respectively. A regiment of armoured cavalry, such as the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (the Black Horse Regiment) in Vietnam, consisted of three full squadrons of armoured cavalry. The squadron normally consisted of a headquarters troop, three cavalry troops, a tank company, and an aviation troop. The three ground troops were a mixture of M48 Patton tanks and M113 ACAVs (Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicles). The aviation troop of the squadron was equipped with helicopters, consisting of UH-1 transports, OH-6 Cayuse scouts, OH-58 Kiowa scout/gunships, and AH-1 Cobra gunships.

Armoured cavalry regiments operated in country for the Corps/Theater Commander, while the squadrons operated as the eyes and ears for the US Army Division Commanders. An Army brigade would only be authorized a cavalry troop, and not a whole cavalry squadron.

According to Army doctrine, the cavalry would find the enemy, and hold the enemy in place; if this was the mission, until the heavy forces were brought up to deal with the located enemy. This process was known as the battle hand-off. The cavalry found them, now the heavies can deal with them; at which point the cavalry is free to disengage and continue with other missions. Security missions could be rear guard, flank guard, or advance guard; the same functions as performed by infantrymen, only with tanks and ACAVs. With the infantry, the advance guard would be called the point man.

Description
Beast-Mounted Infantry ride into battle on alien beasts, utilizing the creature's natural talents in their native environment to surprising effect. Such troops are especially common in the Periphery, where inadequate supplies and the need for speed over alien terrain warrant their use.

Examples
Brasha’s Qum’ran Guard ride their Tariq in service of the Outworlds Alliance. The beasts are cared for like family, and in return the riders are able to exceptional recon and disruption missions in the enemy's rear area.

Armament
Beast Mounted Infantry can be equiped with most standard infantry weaponry options. In the Periphery, Lacking advanced technology, these beast-riders make due with Makeshift Rifles.

I refer you to my comment - I didn't refer to either historical or to modern settings, but to the Battletech setting where Infantry pretty much covers most kinds of squishy non-armoured units. If they were in trucks, they'd still be Infantry.

Even with modern day combat, Cavalry can refer to other types of unit - the Airborne Cavalry in the US use helicopters and the Household Cavalry in the UK use armoured vehicles - horses are only used in the latter for ceremonial use.
