If I'm Optimistic And Thinking In The Long Run, Should I Get The Dwf-W?

I mean if, by any chance, the Direwhale will get any buffs (and I think it should, compared to the actually used pool of 100 tonners) the W variant will probably receive the least because of it's 2 energy hardpoints... And in the case of a mech like the DWF who's really slow and often the focus of fire, losing a ST is very common, which makes the 3E in the CT and head very important.
So, if you would buy one DWF variant, and think for the long run (and optimistic if you actually can), which one would you get?

Personally my DWF is such a gunbag that you take off one side I've still got 1 UAC/10 and 2 UAC/5s on the right and 1 UAC/10 and 4 ERML on the left. Since double ST loss is a kill on a DWF my DWF will remain a threat until it is completely destroyed. I see no reason to need CT and Head hardpoints. Those only come in real handy if you're running a STD engine.

Direwolves can still bring the pain. One of the few mechs that, despite its sluggishness, can at least pack stupid amounts of firepower.

The only one I use is the Prime.

With an honorable mention to the Ultraviolet so you can do the 8 UAC2 thing, but I like the 6 UAC2 Mauler more.

The Dire Wolf's only real problem is how easy it is to isolate and just utterly destroy its side torsos before it has the chance to bring its massive firepower to bear. I don't mind it handling like a brick so long as it doesn't fall apart like a bale of hay, which is exactly what it does. It's really a glass cannon. It really just needs some armor/structure quirks and it would be a good 'mech again. And since the IS has the Annihilator now as their "good" 100 tonner I think it only fair that the Clans get a "good" 100 tonner too.

The Dire is good.

I'm all for giving it some durability buffs Posted Image

If i didn't have one, i'd either get the W for the CT energy or UV for maximum dakka.

But a couple years ago i already bought the Prime, A and B for C-Bills-- Steam Pack W(S) when that came out-- Invasion Prime (sold a copy of the A and B that came with the Wave I) early last year and UV on a summer sale i think (in that order).

Well, I would see Mad Cat MK2, Marauder IIC or Supernova instead.

The direwolf, when it was good, gained its utility from being tough(for the time) while having obscene amounts of firepower. You could stand in overwatch and mostly disregard incoming fire, because anyone peaking you would soon learn not to do so from your withering fusilades of return fire.

Now that IS mechs with durability quirks have become the norm, as well as general weapon power creep, It's simply far too fragile to do its job properly. An annihilator will annihilate it, while IS heavies have more raw armor with better hitboxes. Without durability quirks of its own, especially on the easily lost side torsos, the direwolf will remain out of favor in the meta.

That being said, it's still a fun mech! You can get over 100 alpha with a dual gauss + lasers + jumpjets DWF-W build with full armor. Give it a go while the event is still on, and worst case scenario you can omnipod to a different build or sell the thing post-event for no loss.

Cheeky edit: By fun, I mean semi-viable. It may not be meta, but if you're not a potato, it is still usable. I've had 1k dmg games in it, which puts it in my good books. 10 full alphas out of an assault should be achievable, possibly with a little pug tanking Posted Image Just prepare to get frustrated the first 10 games as you learn to predict your own team's sudden nascar movements.

Well if you want to max out uselessness then Dire is a good pick, though lrm highlander would be slightly better.
